    Between soulmates, the bond between people was sometimes so strong that it happened immediately upon their first meeting. No touching of blood or special ceremonies were necessary; all the soulmates had to do was simply meet each others' eyes, no matter if they could see or not, or, in the case of those whose eyes could not be met, simple skin contact would do.

    Neither Sokka nor Katara remembered their first soul bond. The moment Katara opened her eyes and Sokka met his baby sister, their bond had sealed.

    Then it happened again with Aang.

    Now it was happening with the guy in armor stepping off of the Fire Nation war ship.

    Before the time of the Avatar the spirits danced. As the humans grew, they learned from the dances and eventually made it their own. They gained the gifts of elements from the spirits who fell in love with their dance. In order to keep balance between those with different gifts, the Avatar was not the only spirit that moved through humans. The spirits of the major elements also bonded themselves to a human vessel, much like the Avatar spirit. That souldbonded human was to serve as the link between the great spirit and the human world. They were also meant to be the teachers of the Avatar to assist in keeping balance in a world full of wonder and power.

    That was true, until everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.
