You were of the air, certainly, but it was not your domain in the way of gods or lords until much later. No, you were barely even a thing of your own in those days, a single whisper in the chorus or a firefly in the night.
They didn’t pray to you at first, not the way one beseeches a god, but they would ask a friendly wind sprite for luck. They would smile when you danced around a bard who sang of freedom, and when you tried to bring them flowers. You were… a mascot, a charm, a promise of fortune and a hopeful future. They began to talk to you, eventually, began to believe there was a you, a proper you, that a person lived in this scrap of wind, and with their belief they made it true.

Freminet pauses to look around. He's heard that the Melusines have their own village, but he wouldn't have imagined it would be so... cute. The sort of place that Pers might protect or visit.

Summary
On the eighth day after his awakening, she visits him in person, finding him curled up on the divan like a pill bug. His hair spills over his face and shadows his eyes, but she can tell from the way his bare feet brace against the mattress beneath him that he’s awake. It makes the ball joints in his ankles, already visible through skin torn and pared down to the metaphorical bone, all the more prominent.
He doesn’t need to eat; Nahida brings him food anyway. He doesn’t move as she draws near, though she’s certain he hears her. In the dimness of the cell, the violet streaks in his hair seem almost to glow. Below them, the mitsudomoe symbol stamped into the back of his neck stands stark against his flesh—an indelible reminder of his artificiality.
———
In the aftermath of Shouki no Kami’s fall, Nahida chooses to pick up the pieces.

“You…” He lifts himself up off the divan on shaking arms, grinding his teeth with the effort. “How dare you talk about my pain when you’re the one who ripped my heart out?”
Nahida lowers her head, but her voice is firm. “That wasn’t your heart.”
“Shut up!”
His voice cracks. There’s fury in his eyes but also fear. He can’t stand the truth, she realizes, and clings to the fantasy he constructed in his own head.
“Shut up.” His breath is ragged. He only needs to breathe to speak, and now he sucks in air like it’s the punctuation marks to his staggered words.

She took Claudia up to the attic and showed her the grids and concentric circles, and the large nets at one window. She pointed out the different ways that the spells converted the unpleasantness, inverting the magic by copying its signatures and laying them backwards on the magic to convince it to be neutral again. She noted, too, the redundancies she'd built in to catch especially determined strains of it, and had Claudia watch as one piece snaked off from the main defenses and got stuck in those redundancies. She smiled at Claudia's gasp.
Then Claudia turned to her with shining eyes, her mind clearly alight with questions and curiosity. Querida grumbled inside at the way that look touched the one soft edge of her heart. Please, please let me learn and explore! it seemed to say. Please, I have so much I want to know! Variations of that look were what had gotten Querida through so many years as a teacher, before Mr. Chesney had come and it was only survival for so long.

“If they catch you, you’ll get in trouble.”
Something about that just makes the boy smile more. “Haha. If they catch me. Most people don’t look up, you know.”
“I did,” Jean points out.
The boy blinks. “Well.” He opens his mouth then closes it again, and this time when he looks at her, there is something considering in it. His one eye is bright with curiosity and something else Jean doesn’t know the name to, some strange mix of delight and calculation. “…So you did.” A pause. “Well, anyway. It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Kaeya.”

Amestris was yet another place where Albedo did not belong. Albedo was a stranger to this world and its history. Albedo was an outsider here, like the Traveler had been.
(…) Mondstadt and Amestris could physically never meet. For Albedo to have one, the other had to be sacrificed. Equivalent exchange, one home for another.
Perhaps it was selfish of Albedo to wish he could have both.

It was all so completely fascinating, the way the people of the forest saw things.
Wide-eyed staring at the horizon and knowing without hoping that something will come of it, that things will turn out because the path that it took to get there came like a foregone conclusion— that greatness is not a requirement to be loved by all but a result of it.
That Sethos, a man who is a role, could be a person too, if he tried hard enough.

She is kind but she keeps secrets. You realize this too late, when it’s been four hundred years and you just now notice that when she prances into your rooms and, laughing, takes your hand, she smiles but her reflection in the rain-dark windows takes your hand and weeps. You turn, but Furina pulls you away, out into the storm and away from your duties, out to dance in the rain by the swift-flowing streams while she sings for no audience but you.

“Who are you?” she asked.
“Just a little bird.” The child grinned. “I was flying by when I noticed you from overhead.”
“Noticed?” Ei raised an eyebrow. “It is not a simple thing to perceive me within this space, much less to approach it without my guidance.”
“True. However, it’s structured very similarly to a dream.”
“And why is that significant?”
She planted a hand on her hips, looking proud. “Because I have a penchant for dreams, Aunt Beelzebul.”

Together, they spend the last moments of sunlight going over cases that will be brought to trial tomorrow, as well as paperwork surrounding cleaning of the estate and deciding how to proceed. “By the way, Chief Justice,” Furina hums.
“Yes?” Neuvillette responds, finishing his signature on a document before he turns his head to look at her.
Delighted, Furina giggles before she even speaks. “Next time, you can just ask me for help, you know. You don’t need to do all that… acting. You weren’t made for it. You’re an awful liar.”

You were meant to protect Fontaine, including him, and for once you might do so with strength of your own, real and immediate the way nothing has ever been before.

The Emissaries are tall and fair, in form nearly human. They wait in the Temple of the Thousand Winds, arrayed before three great silver rings. A key waits within, they say, on the other side of things that might be.
"What does it unlock?" Barbara asks.

“Why ask for representatives if you wanted someone who could find this key of yours?” Barbara finds herself asking. “The Adventurers’ Guild would have all the right people for the job. This is the sort of thing they do all day.” The Emissary hums.
“Representative? Perhaps. More accurate… champion, perhaps.” Barbara stiffens.
“Champion?”
“Languages are imprecise,” they say. “Representatives. Champions. Beloved of the city. The best of them. We want… help. We are asking.”
If it had been phrased like that from the start, maybe this would be different now. Maybe it wouldn’t; Jean is the way she is, after all. If they had asked at the beginning for help, and not just for two people to come speak with them, they could have brought their best, and maybe Jean wouldn’t be falling out of the steel-grey rings a little worse off every time.

“I know very well what you intend to say to me.” Kaeya shrugs, “But, Monsieur Neuvillette, even I know there is a time limit for charges brought in court. Whatever grave injustice I may or may not have suffered is too far in the past for anyone to judge.”
Neuvillette leans forward in his seat, interest seemingly piqued.
“You are not wrong. But, tell me, do you believe the past can ever become so far removed–so obsolete from the present day–that it cannot be used to judge the future?”
Not even the past five hundred years have been enough to save him from the machinations of the destiny that hangs over his head like a guillotine. Kaeya is not so foolish so as to pretend that he can overcome the loom of fate so easily.

The first thing Baizhu notices as he regains consciousness is that it is still far too early in the night to warrant being awake.
The second thing Baizhu notices is that he had evidently overworked himself while treating patients the day prior, and was now paying the price for it in the stiff, aching pains layered throughout the muscles of his body.
The third thing he notices is that there is someone else in the room with him.

“Qiqi?” He repeats, clearing his throat. He waits for a moment before reaching out with his hand - delicately, with no sudden movements, for frankly both their sakes - and lightly tugs at a strand of the little girl’s hair that has come undone from her long braid. Baizhu tries to smile something genuine, but knows that to anyone else, it would look as frail and weak and exhausted as he feels.
“What do you need, little one?” he asks slowly, pushing Qiqi’s hair out of her face, tucking the wayward strands behind her ear. Evidently choosing to ignore him again, the child simply leans into his touch, slight and sedate, the coolness of his fingertips seemingly a vague comfort.

She leans back in her chair, the quiet hum of the House of Daena all around her, and traces the inked lines with the tips of her fingers. The equations stand resolute, and the conclusions draw themselves with a grace that would make any scholar nod in quiet approval. The paper breathes with its own confidence.
Layla did this. On her own.
The pride comes first - bright, bursting, golden. She always knew Layla had it in her. But then, a quieter, more fragile emotion finds its way into her heart, whispering;
What am I, if not her guiding hand?

She’s laughing. She’s smiling. She’s not thinking about research proposals or star charts or how to refine Layla’s arguments.
She feels - unreal. Like a dream of herself, unmoored from the function that has always tethered her to the world, to Layla.
They’re still talking, still teasing, but the world seems distant for a moment. It is Layla’s voice that rises in laughter. Layla’s body that curls slightly against the café table, crossed knees just kissing the underside of the wood.
She doesn’t know what to do with that.

The thin morning light carves hollows into [Rosaria’s] face. She looks exhausted. And… something else. Something he cannot place, though it sets him on edge. “I know. [Destroying Mondstat is] the last thing you want. But you bring the gods down upon us anyway.”
He frowns. The certainty in her voice leaves no room for contradiction. “Explain.”
“You are a homunculus. An artificial being created by the alchemist Gold. Her creations have a long history of destroying things. Today, you open the gateway to Celestia, and everything ends. I know because I have seen it happen. It keeps happening. Now get out of bed and help me.”
There is no disbelief in him, only the slow crawl of ice up his spine.

Summary
Crepus Ragnvindr dies in his son’s arms.
The name tastes like ash on Kaeya’s tongue. Crepus gifted the latter half of it to him when he was young, when he was still too new to the family to understand the significance of what it means to be a part of it. When he is older and has realized the ardent ferocity with which the Ragnvindrs love their own, the name becomes a searing brand on his heart, a mark that burns him with a sweet viciousness that he cannot help but cherish no matter how much it hurts to know that it is not truly his.
anagnorisis /ˌænəɡˈnɒrɪsɪs/ — n. (literary; Ancient Greek: ἀναγνώρισις, “recognition”) in the context of the plot of a narrative, the moment when a character realizes the truth of another character’s identity or their own situation; “a change from ignorance to knowledge, producing friendship or enmity between the persons marked by the poet for good or bad fortune” (Aristotle, Poetics 1452a)
On Diluc’s eighteenth birthday, Kaeya scours himself of his lies again and again and again, but he doesn’t realize the worst one until it is almost too late.

Diluc’s hand comes to rest on his shoulder. Kaeya opens his eye, and he finds he cannot turn away from the kindness resting on Diluc’s face. Quietly, like he is coaxing a young child, Diluc asks, “What’s on your mind, Kae?”
It is Kaeya’s need to destroy the softness Diluc looks at him with that finally forces the words out.
