    Summary

“Kip, there you are, thank goodness — oh, you really needn’t bother, it’s so tiresome, isn’t it —” as his Radiancy’s hand moved in that habitual gesture to tell Cliopher to stand — “and I’ve begun already, I suppose going an entire thirty seconds without blurting out something I didn’t wish to would be too long to ask, wouldn’t it, not this spell’s style.” Cliopher rose and stared at his Radiancy, who had returned to pacing, faster than his usual habit, feet moving as quickly as his mouth, which had not yet stopped speaking. “And I must say, well, am compelled to say, I suppose, that I feel terrifically stupid for falling prey to any kind of hostile spell at all — I suppose it could be a poison but that seems unlikely when I know Ludvic and Rhodin have procedures for checking my food, and even if I do feel very foolish for missing something in my own area of expertise I suppose it’s better to feel foolish than to have Ludvic or Rhodin or both come to prostrate themselves to me with their deepest apologies, it always frightens me when they do that —”

    Summary

Kip was on his second hour of duty in the crow’s nest when a rumor floated up to his ears: that their ship, the Horizon’s Glory, had taken a prisoner.

“Beg pardon,” he said, leaning over the edge and raising his voice, “what?”

“A prisoner!” Anyë said, in tones of great glee. “Like proper pirates, we are. I heard the captain caught him at the last port and took him on board at swordpoint!”

    Summary

At least there wasn’t an audience for the look Ludvic turned on Kip and the too neutral way he said, “Tor?”

Kip could feel himself flushing - in Astandalas this was the kind of thing that had lost him jobs before - but he had the excuse of, first of all, amnesia, and second of all, “He didn’t give me any other name!” Kip hissed. “He deflected me off the topic twice!”
