“What happened?” She maybe shouldn’t ask, it’s probably private, and while she and Frank are good colleagues, he’s a good boss, she’s not quite sure what kind of friends they are. But given the enormous crush she’s had on him since she started here, Mel finds that she can’t help herself.
“The uh, the kid from earlier,” he says, his voice cracking. “Just hit too close to home.”
Mel frowns. She didn’t know there was trouble at home, but then again she doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about Frank’s wife. Because Mel spends most of her time thinking about Frank and his bright blue eyes and his steadying presence and the way he sees her and the way he took care of Becca a few months ago and those biceps he keeps parading around and his salt and pepper hair and how attractive his stubble is and how much she wants to feel it on her—
