Summary
The Soulmate Swap is normal for about half the population.
One second, Marina's standing in front of her class of new recruits, some with four years on her, and the next she blinks and she’s standing with her bare feet in the wet sand.
She holds up a hand to feel the air and jolts. Pale, blocky fingers with bitten down nails, tiny palm—not hers.
Not her hand.
She whirls around, kicking up water. She’s in the ocean. On the surface. Under the— She looks up and nearly hisses at the brightness that sears her eyes closed. Against her eyelids, she can still see it, branded on her corneas, and her eyes begin to water as she blinks hard to clear it.

Summary
Upon meeting Pearl and Eight, three things become immediately apparent:
1. Eight is a well-trained, serious soldier. Not an engineer, but when she hears the marching orders, she nods, steadfast, and steps up to the elevator doors without pause. It’s eerie, to see someone so stripped of their memories that their personality goes too—and all that’s left behind is the training and the fighting.
2. There’s no tutorial system coded into the sim yet. It’s an oversight, but Acht imagines that Marina being trapped at the top of the tower wasn’t intended. It’s up to Acht to teach Eight everything she needs to know if they’re going to make it out of here—especially because Pearl seems just as confused. It’s a weird bit of coding, the fact that the drone doesn’t know what’s going on, but Acht figures that the companion NPC would be more endearing if she had to figure things out alongside the player.
3. Pearl is obsessed with Marina.

Summary
Marina is having the best day of her life, and Pearl is trying very hard not to focus on the sensation of the ring pressed into the skin of her chest, held in place by the tightness of her costume and the chain around her neck. The crowd pulses in time with the drums and screams their guts out as Pearl pushes on through her rap beats, and they bring it home like always—and no one knows just how hard Pearl knocked herself into the past.
All except Marina, who grabs her hand as the stage descends and the smoke clears. They have exactly ten seconds until they’re whisked into a golf cart and rushed to the next stage, and Marina doesn’t waste them. She pulls Pearl close, presses her face into the top of her sweaty head, heaving for breath herself, and mumbles, “I can’t wait to perform with you like that for the rest of my life.”
And Pearl’s hearts seize and it’s all she can do to stop herself from proposing right there.
