In fact it probably shouldn't have been, given your promise, and the gaping absence that faithfully awaited you at the story's end – frankly, your mom's household finances couldn't tolerate more than a few days' worth of extra meals. You were just lucky – or, that's the wrong word; really, you were convenient, courtesy of your part in the play, and the sad little vestigial heart inside you that soaked in her kindness like it was the sun. Anyone might've; could've; should've.
But, just for a little while, you had something that was just yours.
