Alex peers up at Henry’s face, the familiar tenseness in his jaw and mildly disinterested eyes nowhere to be seen. Instead, Henry’s expression is open and borderline delighted, like Brie used an extra strong shot of sorcery to draw Henry in and melt the ice that he usually stays locked behind.
Suddenly, Alex’s vague crush on an unapproachable coworker feels realer, all because he’s standing there and looking at Alex’s daughter like she hung the fucking moon. He’s treating the most important person in Alex’s life—his entire goddamn heart—as if she truly matters to him, giving her fist bumps and smiling at her and telling her she’s beautiful like her dad.
It’s doing weird things to Alex’s chest and making his palms sweat even in the air conditioned office, and he can’t decide if he’s okay with that development or if he wants to stick his head in Brie’s Easy-Bake oven.

The next morning, Alex told his parents goodbye and Henry drove him to the airport, both of them sleep-deprived and solemn. Henry hugged him in the shadow of the Delta help desk and kissed Alex’s lips like Alex was his fucking oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing. Alex was still hoping, reeling as he stared down the path in front of him that didn’t include Henry.
It didn’t feel right, pressing his mouth to Henry’s and wondering if it might be the last time.
Even on the other side of security, with his bag slung over his shoulder, Alex looked back.
Henry was walking away, toward the giant glass doors, his head hung and his hands in his pockets. Alex watched him go, letting the tears fall from his eyes as Henry disappeared. His heart ripped from his chest as he took the most painful breath he’s ever taken in his life, because Henry was Alex’s oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing.
But Henry let him go.
Henry didn’t ask him to stay.
So Alex left.

It happens momentarily, the first time Alex sees him again. Time slows nearly to a stop— never mind the fact that he’s mid-pour; the bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue he’s using as a floater tipped just so, the golden liquid spilling into the rocks glass getting dangerously close to overflowing.
In the back of the crowd, on a typically busy Friday night at Allegory, a flash of blond hair pulls Alex’s attention; which wouldn’t be anything new— Alex has a type— except for the laugh cutting clearly through the murmur of conversations. The bright bubble of incandescent joy that he’s somehow still entirely too familiar with, a laugh he would recognize anywhere, regardless of the number of years since it was last heard.

“Caramelton John, what the fuck, who named these?” the man laughs, his loud voice circling in Henry’s ears, low and rich.
Years of planning and ideas, months of blood, sweat and literal tears to set up shop in a foreign country, and hours of back breaking work to serve the community — for free — on their opening day, all for some ungrateful arse to make fun of him for it. Henry feels his jaw clench involuntarily, the tightness in his mouth matching the ache in his chest. He’s bone tired and frustrated and now he’s unspeakably angry.
Pez, who has saved Henry’s life in more ways than he can count, and who has not asked for a single thing all day, turns and says “Hen, dear, could you serve these last few for me?”
Henry inhales deeply through his nose, turns his back to the customers, before he looks Pez firmly in the eye and says with zero hesitation, “No.”

“Grace Aringa, yeah.” Henry nods, ignoring Alex’s questioning glance. How the fuck does Henry know her last name and Alex doesn’t? “What about her?”
“She…is…” Alex takes a deep breath before puffing his cheeks and exhaling quickly. “Having a baby.”
“Oh.” It takes a second before something unrecognisable flickers in Henry’s eyes. “Oh.”
Alex watches Henry blink a few times, watches Henry’s tongue dart out to moisten his lips as he glances at the wall behind Alex’s head for a moment, seemingly composing himself before offering a short nod.
“Right…well.”
“Yeah.” Alex swallows, unable to draw his gaze from the base of Henry’s throat. More specifically, the patch of dark purple skin peeking out from the collar of his soft grey sweater. He wasn’t aware that Henry was a hickey kind of guy.
“I mean,” Henry says. “It’s not ideal but I’m sure we can make it work.”

He’s not upset when Alex makes the mistake of bringing up Nathan over dinner, emboldened by the wine and still a little bitter about how he’d treated Henry at the Christmas party. It makes Henry pause the fork on its way to his mouth, like he’s surprised Alex had even noticed.
“It wouldn’t do either of us any good to be upset about that,” Henry tells him bluntly. “He’s hardly touched me in two years since he began fucking the landscaper. Would you care for dessert?”
Alex wipes his mouth with his napkin and leans back in his chair, his blood simmering again.
“Rather get the check, I think.”
Henry says “Very well,” with all of the elegance of someone they both know is about to be thoroughly taken apart, pays the bill, and leads Alex up to his hotel room.

Alex trails off as Nora leans over to whisper something in June’s ear that causes her to laugh and fully turn her attention to Nora.
Pez, upon hearing the laughter of his goddess, also turns to be included in their conversation. Bea takes this time to pick up her phone and look through her notifications, then notes that most of their drinks are empty so she offers to get them refills.
He has, once again, successfully lost his audience.
It shouldn’t hurt so much, not anymore. Alex is pretty used to this.
They’ve never cut him off or spoken over him, it’s more subtle. It’s getting up for a bathroom break or whispering to each other or tilting phone screens to share a meme while he’s talking and should, theoretically, have their undivided attention. It’s always something.
It shouldn’t hurt.
He’s used to it.
It’s not personal, they say.
But it only happens to him.

Alex is used to being tuned out by his friends. Then, there’s Henry, all blue eyes and attentive. Alex sort of loves him.

He glances down to the word ‘LOVE’ at the bottom. It’s too loud, too harshly written. Alex doesn’t feel harsh or loud. He feels a lot, so much it’s overwhelming sometimes, but the edges are soft, not hard. There’s a glow around it, something hazy and barely tinted gold, and Alex feels like if he could reach out and put his hands near it, they would warm up like they used to when he stood in front of the old brick fireplace back home.
He glances at ‘LOVE’ and then loops back around to ‘HENRY’.
Maybe, Alex thinks, hands shaking, they’re one in the same. Whatever the fuck that means.

When June gets sick, Alex knows he'll do whatever it takes to make sure she gets the care that she needs. Even if that means convincing his nemesis/sexuality-crisis-inducing/clandestine hook-up partner/somewhat of an actual friend to pretend to be his soulmate in order to pull it off. It's both more and less complicated than it sounds.
