He has relearned the definition of family on sixteen instances. It is at sixteen (the sixteenth year, the sixteenth time) that he realizes he is very truly content with his answer.

Dazai’s smile is expectedly ingenuine. “I wouldn’t know.”

“You’re the man who killed my papa and little brother.”
“I am.”
“Mr. Phoenix Wright, I hate you.”
“I hate myself too.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When she goes to LA to confront her family’s killer, Franziska is surprised to what she finds. Instead of the bumbling fool she’s read about in newspapers, she finds a — still foolish — but darker shell of that man, hiding his badge in a drawer and picking up a paint brush instead.
Thoughts of revenge burn out in exchanged for a fragile acquaintanceship formed with trauma and regret.
Summary
Bernard blinks stupidly at the box sitting on his table.
…
He did not put that box there.
Alright Bernard. You were raised in Gotham, notoriously one of the— if not the— most dangerous city/cities in the world. You’ve been around the ballpark. You know better than to open suspicious boxes of unknown origin. This could be filled with a toxin. This could hold a box-sized cannibal goblin. This could explode the moment he cuts it open.
Bernard hikes his shirt collar up over his nose, grabs a knife (for self defense as well as practical use), and just sends a quick prayer to Dionysus that this chaos manifests in some way other than an explosive, because he doesn’t really have a way to protect himself from a bomb. Then he cuts the box open.
———
Or,
Bernard meets his boyfriend’s siblings. He just wants to impress them. Unfortunately for him, he succeeds, and the Bats have a strange way of showing it.
Summary
Atsushi was too young to know much when an adult came by and whisked them away from the darkness of a cellar, giving them a place to call home. They grew up within a different type of humanity, living alongside people in suits and ties and doing jobs with crayons rather then pens and ink like all the adults. Their sister looked at them with fondness, painfully so, and Atsushi knew exactly why. Their ability was awfully useful.
“I need a beta,” Poe says. It’s a regular Saturday afternoon—Poe’s brainstorming for a new book idea, Ranpo is lazing on his couch, and Karl is feasting on some unfortunate apples.
Ranpo clears his throat. “I’m an alpha. That okay with you?”
(Or, where Ranpo is trying his best, Dazai is extremely unhelpful, and Poe is just confused.)
Atsushi glances around helplessly.
“We fucked up,” Akutagawa grumbles, glaring at Atsushi like it’s his fault alone. Atsushi glares back.
Summary
It started with Ling Wen, of all people.
He had been on her palace researching about a specific type of ghost that he had been receiving prayers about, when he noticed her looking.
Like, really looking.
And then Pei Ming joined her. They exchanged some words, and then they were both just like. Staring at him.
Feng Xin didn’t think he wanted to know what the fuck was going on there, so he grabbed the scrolls and walked out. Passing them, though, he thought he heard them saying something like—
“Damn, where did you stop?”
“One hundred and seventy eight.”
“Shit, I only got to thirty two!”
… what the fuck was going on?
Summary
“Wanna bet?”
Ilya blinks.
“On what?”
“Who can get the most numbers tonight, at this club?”
Ilya’s grin falters for half a second, just long enough for Shane to see the flicker of surprise on his face, before a spark of excitement flashes in his eyes. He tilts his head, gaze dragging over Shane like he’s checking for tells.
“You are joking.”
“What’s the matter? Worried you’ll lose?”
The dare lingers, sticky-sweet, and Shane realizes — too late — he might have just stepped into a trap of his own making. Then Ilya downs the rest of his drink in one swallow, and slams the glass down.
“Deal.”
