    Summary

The first weeks of Penelope’s life in Ithaca passed in a careful rhythm.

There were the formal dinners in the great hall, all silver platters and polished goblets, where Odysseus sat at her side and kept the conversation moving like a tide. There were the walks through the palace gardens, the quiet afternoons at the loom in the solar, the visits to the marketplace where merchants bowed and fumbled to offer her the best of their wares.

And through it all, Polites watched.

Odysseus had spoken of her often these past months. From the way he spoke, Polites had been expecting—well—someone remarkable. A woman whose wit could cut a man down before her spear did. A goddess in mortal form.

But here, now, Penelope was all polish and formality.

Still, he caught himself waiting for the flash of wit his friend had promised. For the sly smile that hinted at some private joke. For the words that would prove she could match Odysseus step for step.

Or, when Penelope, the Queen-to-Be, arrives from Sparta, Polites is... less than impressed by the girl his best friend is smitten by, and swears is a god-send. She's not what he expects. Beautiful, yes, but hardly the match of wits Odysseus claims.

    Summary

The mood shifted like stormwinds when one of the guests—a Mycenaean lordling with too much wine and too few brain cells—stumbled too close to Penelope. He grabbed her wrist with a laugh, fingers lingering too long, too bold.

Odysseus was already halfway to standing, jaw tight, his cup forgotten at his feet. “I’ll kill him,” he muttered.

“No, you won’t,” Polites said quickly. “You’ll throw the kingdom into war.”

“I’ll be very diplomatic,” Odysseus growled. “Then I’ll kill him.”

But then, as they watched, Penelope moved.

Or, Odysseus is a simp and loves that his girlfriend could beat him up if she wanted.
