"You better." The warmth encompassing his hand becomes intense for a moment with a press of lips, and then it slips away, and then everything slips away.
When he wakes, he's terrified.
After witnessing a violent attack during which he is also injured, Robby struggles with a paralyzing fear of what it means to get a second chance.

His face is cold and detached, but his eyes are glassy, wet, and Michael wants to cry. He hates hurting Jack.

Michael leaves for his sabbatical ready to die, affairs neatly arranged and plan in place. Except he does not die, pushing it further and further away, searching for something.
He finds a hill, a lake, words, and Jack sitting on the porch of his rented cabin.

"Jack?"
Robby's voice entered the room before he did, and soon Jack could feel his presence even without opening his eyes. The lights were turned down, the door was closed, and he could smell Robby's musky mid-shift scent. The scrubs and hand sanitizer and sweat. The smell of adrenaline and exhaustion.
"In the flesh…" he drawled sleepily without moving. Suddenly his entire body hurt.
"Dana says you did a real number on your hand. Can I see?"
"Suit yourself."
Robby gently pulled Jack's hand out of the pocket and over to him. He didn't look it over, didn't move anything, just held it. The goal, for the moment, was just to touch him. "You need ice and an x-ray."
"I know."
"And your ring…" Robby started a little quieter. He was hesitant but firm. There was no choice. "I don't think I can save it."

Summary
A particularly tragic case has left Robby low. Jack comes over to raise his spirits, and though Robby is one secretive son of a bitch when it comes to his own feelings, everything seems like it will be okay.
Later, the unthinkable happens. The attempt leaves Robby in the hospital and Jack scrambling to make sense of it all. He would've preferred Robby shoot him stone-cold dead.
As he starts the long road to recovery, Robby and Jack wrestle with the aftermath. Not only dealing with the devastation of his partner trying to take his own life, Jack struggles with his moral obligations as a doctor, a friend, and a partner. Robby wants to continue to be a pillar for his family to depend on, but has to come to terms with the fact that he cannot be an island forever.Bookmarked by Lostandnotfound1
