Summary
We all love to tell stories of a hero triumphing over evil. According to those stories, Mario has defeated Bowser and rescued the princess again and again, without fail. But anyone who has actually played the platformers those stories are based on knows that most runs don’t end in victory for the hero. It usually takes many tries, and many Mario lives, before one finally makes it to the end.
This is a story of the failed attempts: the countless Marios who fell in bottomless pits, whose heroic journeys were never finished. Really, this is the story of just a few of those fallen Marios, trapped in a forgotten dimension of darkness, faced with the end of their own stories, and wondering if any faint hope might remain for themselves, or for the worlds they left behind.

PLEASE, the prose was very immersive, the characters are well done and complex, and the premise was extremely interesting. If I could kudos a work twice, even thrice, then it would be this. I have never felt so strongly with a character before and this hits me with all the feels. Easily tops the list! -
