Summary
Courtland knew that if he wanted to, the Driver could easily pick the hammer back up and smash it against his hand right now, breaking it irreparably while he had his guard down.
He knew that if he ever felt the need to, the kid could slip back into that feral, untamed state of mind, beat his head into a pulp and cave his skull in just to get the uncomfortable feeling to stop.
And Courtland wouldn't have blamed him if he did.The point is that the Driver did none of those things.
He just stopped, and allowed him to do as he pleased.
He wanted him to do it.
Maybe even needed to.
That, to him, was the most terrifying part.Or...
After the last job didn't end well, Court finds himself temporarily on pause between missions, with his mind conflicted between a newfound desire for normalcy and the need to feel the familiar rush of adrenaline running through his veins. He seemed to had everything under control, until one evening he comes back to find the door of his latest safe house busted through and a trail of fresh blood leading inside.

He could feel Standard's hot gaze on him. He could smell the sharp scent of everything that was Standard seeping into him with the cigarette smoke. He didn’t know anything about cigarettes but it smelled like an expensive one, rich and warm. He stayed facing straight ahead. Standard flicked his cigarette out in front of them, almost burnt down. It skipped head over heels across the sidewalk into the darkness, red hot tip flickering in and out of view like a firefly before being swallowed by the gutter.
Driver had never seen a firefly, so he was just guessing really. He took his toothpick out of his mouth and tucked it behind his ear neatly.
"Light another one."

“He had a sharp nose and head with full, healthy hair, and was dressed in a white button-up shirt that looked crisp and too tight on his body, with slacks hanging low on narrow hips. There was stubble along his jaw and exhaustion beneath his eyes despite the well-kept mustache and soft blue tint of his irises, but somehow neither of those things took away from him. If anything, they added something unfairly charming. He smelled faintly of cheap cologne and cigarette smoke, and something sweeter underneath that reminded Healy vaguely of oranges.

“Shouldn’t be a problem.” The other man’s voice was smooth, and if Grace was hearing correctly it almost sounded like there was an undercurrent of mirth.
That’s when it clicked, was Stratt siccing a babysitter on him? “Hold on! What trouble are you thinking I'm going to get into?” Should he be offended? He was a grown man, he’d worked in countless labs before and sure he’d had some questionable outcomes but they’d just let him be the first scientist to study an alien life form! They should have more trust in him than this!
”Everyone in the world wants to get their hands on astrophage. Simon is here to protect you from them.” Stratt explained, turning again to give Grace an exasperated expression. “I should hope you don’t need constant supervision from yourself Dr. Grace.”
