Five looks up from his book, stretching slightly as he uncurls a bit to eye him from his position across from Diego. His eyes narrow. "I do talk to you." It's a short reply, as are all his replies, Diego thinks, crafted to end conversations rather than continue them.
"No, you talk back to us, but you never talk to us. Like, you never want to talk to us," Diego grumbles.
Five considers this for a moment, blinking at him, before he shrugs. "Huh. I guess I don't."

Five stares at his back, his mind stumbling over his brother’s words, uncomprehending. He’s held his heart out in his hands for them to see, and all they’ve done is step on it, dismissing him, like his efforts are for nothing.
He can’t help the laughter that spills out of his mouth.
It has been for nothing. Stop the apocalypse, save the world, keep his family alive—those are his goals, but what has he accomplished? Nothing! He’s stood in the wreckage of his hubris at thirteen, burying the only people in the world who mattered, and he’s about to do it again, in the same body as the first time no less.
Isn’t that ironic? Isn’t that hilarious?
Five laughs harder. He laughs so hard it hurts.

Febuwhump Day 22: regret
The kid’s annoying.
It’s a fact. The kid talks too much, too fast, and it’s annoying. That’s just how it is.
He wishes that was a good excuse for ignoring the calls. And the texts. And the incessant, unnecessarily long voicemails. He wishes he'd kept a closer eye on the kid because then maybe he wouldn't have missed his own Homecoming to fight his date's dad. He wishes his negligence hadn't indirectly caused a world of trauma for a high school sophomore.
He can't fix it now, but he can at least try to make amends.
Peter seems like a pretty forgiving kid.
