More importantly, it meant I could pretend – both to Oliver Blackwood and to myself – that any unattractively sweaty, out-of-breath shakiness was due to having run the five minutes between the tube stop and the pub where we were meeting. No, actually, that was more than a little embarrassing. Perhaps I’d tell Oliver it was ten minutes – although he was the kind of considerate wanker who’d have checked my route in advance to make sure the pub wasn’t too far out of my way, so he’d know I was lying, but would be too well-mannered to point it out.
