Shen Qingqiu died with a breathless, wheezing laugh.
There was blood on his lips and his teeth as he bared them in a painful imitation of a smile. A smile full of helpless anger and spite and an odd sense of resignation. And he laughed. Deep and guttural. He laughed until he choked. He laughed until the color fled from his cheeks and his eyes dulled. He laughed until there was no air left.

It is on a still, still night that Mai thinks that she would have dug out her eyes and given them to Maki if it would have only given her sister the ability to see curses and have cursed energy. Perhaps if they swapped eyes somehow, she thinks as she trembles in her futon, waiting for the shadow of what can only be a curse float by the door and leave.
If Maki were the one who could see curses, everything would be fine. If Maki were the one who could see curses, she’d laugh at them and kick their butts and tell them to go back to wherever they came from. If Maki were the one who could see curses, the Family would like Maki more and they would teach Maki things instead of Maki having to squint through the gaps of the doors and curl her fists in anger at the way people don't even see her.
