Now Mira stood outside Zoey’s door, heart tapping a frantic rhythm under her ribs. The hallway felt too quiet. Every creak of the floor echoed like it might be footsteps—but it never was.
She knocked, light but clear. “Zo?”
No answer.
She hesitated, then knocked again. “Zoey?” Her voice cracked a little on the full name.
Still nothing.
Her hand stayed on the door longer this time, like maybe Zoey could feel it. Like maybe that would be enough.
“I didn’t mean what I said like that,” she said softly. “I mean—I meant the words, yeah. But not like that. Not to make you feel like you were too much.”
Her voice faltered.
“I was frustrated. Not with you. Just… with how you kept saying you were fine. And I know that’s what you do, but—” she exhaled, her forehead pressing lightly against the door. “You don’t have to pretend with us. With me.”
She knocked once more, more tentative this time. “Zoey…?”
Silence.
Her hand dropped to her side, guilt crashing back down like a wave.
“…Yeah,” she muttered. “I deserve that.”
or.
Zoey gets sick, tries to hide it, and convinces herself that Mira and Rumi have enough to deal with—without being a burden, too.

Summary
Mira was about to push up and leave, feeling she’d done the unthinkable and disappointed Zoey. Instead, Zoey rubbed her back gently and quietly said, “Please come back.”
Mira’s heart stutter-stepped. She pushed up off of Zoey, her flight instinct kicking in. It was a simple, chaste request, but it was so terrifying. Zoey wanted her there and Mira wanted nothing more than for Zoey to want her and she felt too close to it being a reality.
But when she pushed up, removing her torso from the soft bed of Zoey, she looked down and saw a quiet pleading in Zoey’s face. There was a shimmer in her eye and her hand reached up, fingertips resting on Mira’s cheek. Zoey flattened her palm against Mira’s cheek and softly uttered, “Please.”
Mira could never deny her. Even when she was getting too close and even when she was terrified. She put her hand on the outside of Zoey’s and nodded against it. “Okay.”

“It’s—” Rumi physically freezes. It looks like it takes her a moment to compute what Mira had said, then she finishes stiffly, “It’s what?”
Mira’s never been one to lie; and, lo and behold, hashtag polytrix was indeed pressed up as number one on the social media app they’re staring at. Zoey glances down at the related hashtags trending with it: #ITSREAL #POLYTRIXONTOP #RUMIONBOTTOM #HUNTR/XGIRLS #TOTHEGAYWORLD

“If this is the view I wake up to, maybe I should sleep over more often.” Zoey’s voice is husky from sleep but it still contains the playful tone her words carry. She smiles softly up at Rumi as she peeks out from the hood of the soft pink hoodie and part of Mira’s loose hair.
“Good morning, Zoey.” Mira runs her fingers along Zoey’s waist, smiling when the younger girl sighs happily at her touch.
“Good morning. Did you want your hoodie back?” A glance is shot at Rumi, who merely grins down at her.
“Nope! You look good in my clothes.” Rumi smiles wide, smug as she leans down to press kisses along Zoey’s cheeks, laughing softly as sweet giggles pour out of Zoey. Her fingers slip underneath the hem of the pink hoodie, smirking when she hears Zoey letting out a breathy gasp.
There’s absolutely nothing beneath the pink hoodie.

A few weeks into their three-month hiatus, Rumi woke up with pain in her jaw that was traveling to the rest of her head. A growing pressure in her forehead, a bone-deep ache throughout her lower jaw, so deep she could feel it in her teeth. The pain caused her to be unable to have a restful sleep, tossing and turning all night.
When Zoey and Mira found their leader one seemingly lazy morning, Rumi was lying on the couch on her back, one leg hanging off the side, with a microwavable cartoon tiger heating pad pressed into her face.

“Do you trust us?” Mira asked. Rumi’s gaze zeroed on her with an intensity that felt too heavy to carry on her eyes.
“I do” she said solemnly “with my life.”
The answer weighed in the room by how openly vulnerable it had been. There was a raw undertone to it, more than one way she meant it; she’d die for them, she’d trust they could save her and…she’d let them take her life.
The moment existed; it burned and went out without any of them being truly able to acknowledge it, nor ignore it.
Zoey dropped the contents of the bag, revealing a collection of brushes and a variety of paint bottles “I have an idea” she said “Well, more than that, obviously, but this one feels the most meaningful” she grabbed the supplies “maybe to help you accept yourself and for us to truly understand what you are feeling, we should feel it in the flesh as well.”
“We are going to paint the patterns on our skin, exactly as they are on yours” Mira provided.

The defeat of Gwi-Ma didn't take away the scars they had inflicted on one another. Words weren't enough to shatter the silence, but perhaps rewtriting the meaning of the patterns into their own skin could help them all understand what laid underneath.Series
