Summary
Tommy’s timer was just a green timer amongst all the other green timers of the world. Not that anyone else knew that.
When Tommy manifested his power, he thought that it would be cool like breathing fire or flying. Instead, at the ripe age of 6 years old, he was told when everyone - including himself - would die. He can see timers above everyone, and he is aware of his own. They slowly count down until that person dies, which is when the timer turns black.
So why is he seeing someone walking aound with black timer?

Summary
Jake lost a piece of himself when he was told he'd never be able to walk again, an unfortunate hazard of the job. But when he was laying there in the hospital, he would dream of the stories his brother told him about Pandora. He'd have these recurring dreams of flying, feeling free. He wanted to feel that freedom again, and the Avatar Program could provide that.
It's why when he arrived on the indigenous moon he wasn't looking to be some counterspy for Colonel Miles Quaritch, and he certainly wasn't looking for a permanent place among the Na'vi. Jake only wanted to be free. He just never expected his training with the Omaticaya hunter Tsu'tey to alter the course of what he desired.
