Summary
Pomni awakes from a dream yet again, the same one every so often. A dark space with one purple lamppost still illuminating them. The final words Jax utters before the end clinging to her bleeding heart. And it hurts. She’s out of the circus, once again flung back into routine, lack of friends or meaning beyond her work. It is simply put stagnant. But not where one would find joy or meaning in the simplicity of stagnation and normalcy. Cause those she cared for are gone, or so she believes. If they even are alive at all, she has no idea where they might reside. Her days consists of repetition and self-deprication. She wakes up for work, heads home after one drink at the local bar, ordering the same beverage every time, thinking of him. And then spends the hours searching. One day, she finds herself out of coffee in her decrepit livelihood, forced to break routine. Coffee, insect spray, an energy drink, an overpriced sandwich, some dextrose grape-sugar cubes to make the shift bearable and… Just another night to bear, to hold on. And yet.

That I should date you??”
“Because holing up alone in the dark and stewing in your feelings until you mutate is a better idea?” she asked flatly. “I am so tired of fighting to be allowed to be close to you. Especially when I care about you and I’m pretty sure you also care about me.” She flopped onto her back in frustration, still holding his hand in hers. “Even though I don’t know what the right thing to do for you is … I love you, and I’m going to keep you from losing your mind in here if it kills me.”

A few days after Jax's abstraction, Zooble opens a bar and invites everyone for a few drinks.
For the first time in what felt like forever, laughter echoed through the circus again.
Everyone showed up, except Pomni.
She stayed behind the safety of her room, unable to face the empty space where Jax should have been.
Ragatha spends hours each day worrying about Pomni, and wondering how she can help her.
One night, with more than a few drinks in her system, Ragatha leaned against the bar and looked toward Caine with an idea that was either incredibly stupid...
...or exactly what Pomni needed.
"Hey, Caine," she muttered, pointing her glass at him. "What if... you brought back Evil Jax?"
