    Summary

Despite it all—all meaning familial trauma and neglect, casual social ostracization, and the general crushing weight of existence—Elphaba liked to think of herself as an optimist.

If she wasn’t, after all, she certainly wouldn’t be doing this.

    Summary

“I like you,” Galinda said bluntly. In direct contrast to Elphaba, continuing the conversation seemed to be having a calming effect on her. She'd probably done this before—no doubt hundreds of people had done this to her.

Had done this for real, had meant it. Because if there was one thing Elphaba knew, it was that no one who said those words to her had ever, ever meant them. Even her family—who she knew loved her, albeit in their own flawed ways—they didn't like her. Elphaba wasn’t a fool; she knew she wasn't a likeable person. She'd stopped wishing to be one a long time ago. She'd gotten used to it in grade school when boys would ask her out on dares, and in high school when girls would never ask at all.

Somehow, she'd believed that she and Galinda were past outright cruelty.

    Summary

The chamber reeked of iron and milk, wet linen and afterbirth, but to Elphaba it smelled of sorrow. She edged forward despite herself, as if drawn by morbid magnetism, and touched the babe's brow with two hesitant fingertips. The baby twitched, eyes shut tight, and Elphaba recoiled, as if her own stain might bleed further into the child.

“I’m sorry,” she breathed. The words clung damply to the child’s forehead. “I’m so sorry you look like me.”

    Summary

For a moment her feet stilled. The girl didn’t look annoyed, just awfully nervous. That made two of them. She was wearing a simple black dress. But what mostly made her stand out was the extraordinary color of her skin. Emerald green.
