Throughout Sir Taryon Darrington's Daring Tales and Tribulations book, there were various different idea scrapped before he fell on the autobiography idea. But with the reworked chapters Doty had written, of course, with the hundreds of pages, some are bound to be tucked away instead of tossed out. This scrapped chapter was the tale of a caged maiden, one of the first workings of the book that no would would ever see.

Summary
As a child, his father and grandmother explained that whenever the light spoke to him, he would know. Even without any words, it would be enough. Wicander couldn't count the number of nights he'd lay awake as a child, giddy with joy like every night was Candle Feast, whispering out into the night sky in hopes for the candle sparks to ignite into flames, only to be met with silence.
But this couldn't be the light.
There was this emptiness, like rot spreading its roots throughout his body.

It was never meant to be a curse.
In fact, according to Zoya, it was supposed to be a gift. The day Wylan Van Eck was born, the fairy had appeared in his nursery and uttered the following words:
"My gift is obedience. Wylan will always do as he is told." Before either of the women in the room could protest, she vanished with a wave of her hand and an order for the baby to stop crying.
