Mabayu's ending was meant to be rather concise: erase Homura's memory, erase her own memories, and cut. Let the story unfold without her and go on to its intended conclusion.
Shame she hesitated.
But, if she really does let herself be erased and let Madoka ascend, is that really the best ending? Would that leave Homura happy?
Not like she can really change the ending, it's fate, but isn't it worth trying to help a little more?

Another dead end. Another failure. But when Homura prepares for the reset to try again, something doesn't go right - and instead of waking up in a hospital, she bears witness to the fateful meeting of a boy and a devil, both trying desperately to survive.
As it becomes clear that she's stuck here, in this strange world far flung into the past, where there are no gleaming red eyes watching from the shadows, devils roam about in plain sight, and everything is so DIFFERENT (but not different enough), Homura makes a decision. She may not be able to save Madoka, but she can save this boy from the terrible circumstances he's been flung into.
And, in her humble opinion, she'd done a good job of just that for the next couple of years. Then her brother died, Pochita became his heart, and that was the start of a whole slew of problems.
