According to Council records, the Fulgur Ovium Zedaph Pleighs and his two co-workers - the Ignis Petra Tango of the Tek Clan and the Inferni ImpulseSV - are officially called Sapience Outreach Specialists. They jokingly refer to themselves though as the First Contact Crew. It’s up to them to determine the sentience and sapience of alien races that either volunteer or are brought to them by the Council.
And recently the Council has brought them one hell of a challenge: determine the sentience and sapience of a recently discovered species called Terrans using an individual that they nickname Blue.Meanwhile Skizz just wants to be treated like a person by the aliens that abducted him and go back to Earth…

Summary
Skizz is a human who's been abducted by alien pirates, but his fellow prisoner might be just the person he needs to help find his way back home. Now if only said person wasn't a lava monster with a completely incompatible form of communication.
Tango needs to escape the pirate ship he's been taken captive on, but he has no hope of doing it alone. If he can convince this strange other creature to trust him, they might just have a chance at freedom.
Zedaph has crash-landed on Earth, a very unfamiliar and very off-limits planet. A local he stumbles upon could be the key to getting him reunited in space with the partner he was separated from, without also getting arrested... if he can somehow teach them enough about the physics of FTL travel for them to repair his busted ship.
Impulse's best friend vanished in the night, and was replaced by morning with a literal alien. If this is his only lead, there's no way he can let it slip by-- rescuing someone from space would otherwise be absolutely impossible for him. He can probably find some old appliances to recycle into a decent sci-fi spaceship engine, right?

Some part of Jimmy had always known he wouldn’t survive this game.
Not in a self-doubting way, to to speak; Jimmy knew he was fit, and strong, and more than capable of handling himself in a fight. With Grian and Joel beside him—a sturdy little alliance that afforded them two pairs of wings and countless destructive ideas—there were even times when he’d felt poised to win. It wasn’t in a reckless way, either—like Scar, who had joked about how many times he’d nearly walked off cliffs. Jimmy didn’t think he’d die, and Jimmy didn’t want to die.
But Jimmy knew he would die, as surely as he heard the ticking of his life timer. It sat in the back of his throat—a sourness that surfaced every time a player lost a life. 'It’ll be me first' was a fact that came as natively as gravity.

You know you have:
- Dozens of pairs of closed Eyes, organized by color. Many yellow ones form your hair, many red ones form your ear-wings, and the remainder try to blend into a skin tone. Most other colors are used only for structural support.
- Only one pair of open Eyes, as you're going undercover. This pair is Yours, too vibrant a purple to be wasted anywhere else.
- A normally inconspicuous outfit; sweatpants, slip-on shoes, and a large red sweater. It'd be a whole lot easier to fit into the sweater if you didn't have to keep the sleeves rolled up, but it turns out fine. The seams between the Eyes look enough like scars.
