They jerk the chair he’s chained to backwards and tilt it until the only thing keeping it upright are their hands. Behind him, another drags the tub into place. He pants, struggling through the panic and the petty need to keep them from knowing that they’re getting to him. He knows it’s a losing battle.
“Last chance, bard,” the hated voice whispers into his ear.
He fills his lungs with the fetid smelling air of the prison and tries to find the resolve that had been enough to make him face Nilfgaard alone.
A sigh. “Have it your way.”
The water closes over his head.

Being a professional athlete in a contact sport is an exercise in enduring pain. Sometimes you get benched for three weeks because you have a broken cheekbone after you get hit in the face with a slap shot. Sometimes you play through a strained quad, a bruised shoulder, a mild fever. Most times, it’s just the constant, unending soreness that comes with pushing your body to its limit every single day. Every athlete had an injury they hated most, though, one that’s particularly painful or recurrent or just annoying.
Ilya fucking hated injuring his ribs. There is almost nothing you can do with your body that doesn't involve moving your torso, and the pain is deep, throbbing, and gets just a tiny bit worse every time you breathe. Sitting up hurts, lying down hurts, walking hurts, and worst of all, coughing fucking hurts.

Summary
Ilya wakes from a nightmare so vivid that, for a few terrifying seconds, he can't tell where the dream ends and reality begins. In the nightmare, Shane is lying motionless on the ice after his accident with Marleau. When he finally wakes up, the panic doesn't disappear. what make it worse Shane's side of the bed is empty.
What Ilya doesn't know is that Shane had only stepped outside to take a call from Hayden. When Shane returns, he finds Ilya standing on the porch, barefoot, shaking, and crying. He talks Ilya through the panic, helps him breathe, wraps him in his arms, and reminds him that he's safe.
When Ilya admits he's afraid to go back to sleep, Shane doesn't hesitate to abandon his carefully planned morning routine. He climbs back into bed, holds him close, and promises to stay right there until he wakes up. Whatever the nightmare takes from him, Shane is determined to give back a sense of safety.

It’s not until he makes it halfway up the stairs to Rozanov’s bedroom that it occurs to him in a cold rush that it isn’t just anxiety that makes it this hard to breathe.
“No,” he tells himself firmly, white knuckling the bannister and trying to take a deep breath just to prove that he can.
