Summary
“Come here, kid.” One of Robby’s hands catches Dennis’s and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennis’s attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
“Nope, don’t look at that,” Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennis’s eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. “Look at me. Yep, good. I’m right here. You’re doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.”
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennis’s face. ”Robby—”
“I know. It’s just Dana and Perlah. We’re just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. You’re safe.” Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennis’s hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. “Okay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."

“I’m not that young, sir,” Whitaker mumbled, tapping ash like it was muscle memory. “And it’s not a new habit. Been smoking since I snuck a pack of Newports from my brother’s stash when I was thirteen.”
“How old are you now?”
Whitaker turned to look him in the eye as he took a long drag. “Twenty six," he said like a question.
Robby’s gaze was fixated on the point where Whitaker’s lips wrapped around the filter of the cigarette. Huh. He was right. Twenty six wasn't that young.
Robby finds out Whitaker smokes, and why, then crosses several professional boundaries in his pursuit to take care of the younger man.

Summary
Shane Hollander considered himself to be a relatively professional person.
Not necessarily ambitious. Not particularly career-oriented. He simply liked knowing what was expected of him and doing it well.
The library suited him for that reason.
It kept him busy without being suffocating. There was a routine to the things he did, which was something he appreciated. He knew the catalog system better than most of his coworkers and could find a misplaced book within ten minutes. It was easy to fall into that rythm.
Shane was suddenly thrown out of this routine when the library hosted a community program for Fire Prevention Week.
