Summary
As a child Ryland is hungry for food, comfort, affection, safety and love. An uncertain number of years later, dying of malnutrition on a world that genuinely loves him, Grace is still haunted by this past.
Of course he doesn't remember any of that.
Chapter 3:
Ryland isn't a thief. He isn't. He never takes anything that anyone still wants, he just picks up things they they forget or don't care about anymore. That's not the same as stealing and anyone who says it is is stupid.The half deflated ball that Freddy had kicked onto the school roof just to see if they could? That was Ryland's now. He'd got it down with the help of a drainpipe and a big stick, and he'd fixed it up with bubblegum and a bandaid and it was practically as good as new if you didn't mind blowing it up every half hour.
And the GI Joe that those big kids he doesn't know had blown up in the alley with fire crackers was his as well. They'd melted his left arm all down, and then tried to send him into space with a bottle rocket, so obviously they didn't deserve him, even if they did still want him.

Summary
It would have probably been best if Grace recovered a few more memories of his life on Earth before asking the Eridians to synthesize alcohol for him. Like, maybe, all the memories of how dependent he used to be on substances and how much of a train wreck his life was whenever he let them control him. Surely, though, things will be different on an alien planet.

Three times Ryland Grace being sick is met with indifference + one time a sentient rock takes it very seriously.

“Hi,” he says, trying out the word. He sounds snotty and sleepy. “Sorry to bother you. I think… I-I think someone el-else needs to watch my group.”
There’s silence on the other end.
“Why?” is all that comes next.
Inconvenience.
He’s always an inconvenience.
Ryland sucks in a deep breath that leaves him coughing. “I don’t feel… I d-don’t feel very well, and… I t-threw up, and I…”
His voice gives out before he can finish.

‘Ryland Grace’ has always been a careful dance between remembering and forgetting. A self argument debating if he’s merely subject to the whims of a universe driven by treacherous chaos, or the sole proprietor of his fate. He’d resigned to an existence that meant never knowing the full truth. Skating by on the surface. Until a life-threatening accident on Erid knocks him off-course —physically and mentally— presenting a new path for his consideration.
There’s a lot of jagged edges around events from his life that he wishes remained buried. But for the first time, Ryland has the opportunity to bring light to even the darkest corners, and create a stronger foundation for the relationships in his one-of-a-kind, wild ride of a life.
(Plenty of angst/hurt/comfort, timey-whimey flashbacks, etc. with fluff and lovely bits holding it together in between)

On a long jorney to Erid Grace and Rocky decide to deal with traumatic nature of Eridian's experience in space. They do it with talks, singing, gossiping and dancing.
I just thought there is a lot of works about Rocky helping Grace to deal with heavy emotional stuff, there should be one where Grace supports his friend also!
