Yes, Eddie had watched the show. Of course he fucking had; what else was he supposed to do? It was on cable during the 3-5 p.m. block, and back then he wasn’t allowed to bike across town, or go to the park, or really do much of anything. Winning Ticket was a shitty program about a family that struck big and won the lottery; since its release he’d watched it at least 5 times over in its entirety.

“It’s okay,” he whispered. Then, almost inaudibly: “I just want to watch.” He pawed at Richie’s jeans gently.

Eddie scoffed. Who’s your friend, yeah, alright. What a cornball. If he can’t seem to address Eddie himself, there’s no point in dawdling. “Sorry, we’ve got to go to the library right now,” he said tersely, grabbing Bill’s arm once again and starting in the opposite direction.
“Going so soon? Bill, c—oh, shit,” Richie hissed.

Eddie's wearing a suit. Dark blue and loose-cut, or maybe it’s just too big. She has a champagne colored ribbed top under it, boat necked. Shiny black horsebit loafers. A slouchy purse is clutched hard in her left hand, her phone in her right, tapping away. Possibly crafting another impatient text to Richie asking what's taking so long. She still has the haircut, looks like she hasn't missed any appointments – it's as short as ever.
Her artless beauty is evident in how her face relaxes into a dimpled smile when she spots Richie. Warm brown eyes catch and hold her gaze, making it impossible not to smile back. Richie notes the bags under her eyes. No makeup, at least not as far as she can tell.
“Is that what you're wearing?” Richie asks as soon as she's within earshot.
Eddie's smile drops and she looks down at her ensemble. “Yeah. Wait, why?”
“No, nothing.” If Richie had seen her from behind she might have briefly mistaken her for a man, albeit a very small and very cute man. Eddie's a lot shorter, wearing flats when Richie's in heels. Richie's insides turn with unease and she has to bite her tongue not to say it – You look gay.

Eddie cast around for topics that might get Richie going—weird movie concepts, gross food combinations, Odd Future, how much all the TV Eddie liked apparently sucked—but nothing seemed like it would be enough to fix whatever this was. Eddie took a deep breath as subtly as he could. “Do you, like, hate it here?”
Richie made a laugh-adjacent noise. “Uh, yeah. What tipped you off?” he said immediately. But then he looked at Eddie out of the corner of his eye. “Do you?” he asked, sounding less sure.
“So fucking much,” Eddie said.

Fuck.
Look. As much as Richie will talk a big game about all the girls he fucks (even though he’s still a virgin, just like the rest of the guys), and all the girls who suck his monster wang round the clock (even though he’s never so much as kissed a girl), he never actually has a particular girl in mind when he runs his mouth like that.
In fact, Richie’s not sure if he’s ever — like-liked a girl. He’s never really felt that way about any of the girls he’s known, not even when he noticed something about them that he liked, that made his heart skip a beat, like when a girl’s eyes were just the right shade of warm brown, or when they scowled and blushed at some dirty joke he’d made in their vicinity.
It’s just… it seems nice, is all, to have someone you love so strongly that you’d declare your love for them so publicly, so loudly, for all the world to see.
(Or: After the summer of 1989, Richie comes to terms with not only being gay, but also being in love with his best friend. Predictably, it does not go well.)
