He is supported by his friends and family and yet he cannot stop thinking of his rival. But he and Ilya have never been more disconnected, so he resigns himself to fighting this without Ilya in his life.
Ilya knows he was an asshole last Spring. Shane has been ignoring him all summer. But he figures that once he's back in North America and the season starts, he'll be able to get back in Shane's good graces. Yuna Hollander was a member of the Japanese Imperial family until she went to college in Canada and fell in love with a hockey player. With her parents' blessing, she renounced her status as a princess and became an average Canadian citizen and produced a son who is known as Hockey Jesus. Visits by the Hollander family to Japan are extremely low-key and most people tend to forget that she's the daughter of the emperor.
Shane is a hot prospect for the MHL when his uncle, the Crown Prince, dies from pancreatic cancer. He doesn't even actually connect his relatives with the imperial family; he's so focused on hockey that almost everything else doesn't register and hasn't for a long time.
The problem is that there are no remaining male heirs to the throne in his mother's generation and his aunts only have daughters.
It's getting to be an issue.
