Summary
Sokka walks until he’s almost sweating, finding himself in a courtyard halfway across the palace. He sits on a patch of grass, a bit damp already from the night’s humidity, and plunges his hands into the earth, ripping up tufts of grass in each grip.
He does this, over and over, tearing handfuls and handfuls of grass and mud, trying not to think too hard about anything in particular, and failing, spectacularly.

It’s instinct—the same reason he sleeps on the side of the bed closest to the door, the same reason he used to hold onto the back of Chris’s shirt if he leaned too far over a railing.
Buck’s eyes don’t leave the road. “Maddie went back to Big Bear.”

“With who?” Lucy asked.
“Nope, not part of the question,” he smiled at Lucy, easy as anything. Buck tried to count quickly in his head, the math not adding up.
“My turn, right?” Eddie asked the group. “Chim. Truth or dare.”
or: the 118 has a 24 hour shift, and zero calls. The firefam spends it playing games, and everyone takes the opportunity to tell Buck just how much they love him.

“It’ll go fine.” Howie advised. “I don’t like the idea of you being there alone,” he joked with a small little smile. “But it’ll be okay.”
“I’m not alone.” Maddie teased with a matching smile of her own.
“You’re right.” Howie conceded. “You have our scary baby girl to hold everyone off.”
Maddie snorted. “I meant -.”
“I know what you meant.” Howie sobered. “I like the idea of him being there even less.”
Maddie’s stomach jolted. “Do you think I made a mistake?” She asked cautiously. “Should I have told him not to come?”
Howie waved a hand to the side. “Nah,” he shrugged. “We both know Buck’s going to Buck.”

Summary
“My mom died,” Buck says flatly, like reciting a fact he read somewhere. He adds a small shrug, as if that explains it. It doesn’t feel real. The words sit in the air, weightless and strange.
Eddie frowns. Bobby shifts closer.
“Are you okay?” Bobby asks gently.
Buck blinks at him, then gives a quick nod, too fast to be convincing. “Yeah,” he says. His voice is thin, brittle. “Did you want me to start lunch? I was thinking maybe that cheesy broccoli bake.”
Eddie’s brows knit together. “Buck…” he says carefully, voice low and steady.
“Or chili,” Buck continues, his hands smoothing out a crease in his jacket like that’s the thing that matters. “I think we’ve got enough ground beef.”
“Buck,” Eddie says again, firmer this time.
Buck’s hands still. He finally looks up, meeting Eddie’s eyes.
Oh.
His mom died.
