When Arthur saw him exchange a fleeting glance with Lancelot, his heart sank. Suddenly he realized he didn't want to know the answer.
"Alright, uhm..." Merlin spoke with his gaze turned to the fire before him. "I supposed... someone who's kind, brave and pure hearted. Someone noble and loyal". Merlin scratched his forehead, clearly embarrassed as a chorus of 'uuuuh' spread through the clearing.'The most noble and brave', wasn't that how Merlin had told him that Kilgharrah, The Great Dragon, had once called Lancelot?
Arthur suddenly felt very nauseous.
How could he have been so stupid? Now it all really made sense.

With nothing else to occupy his mind, Merlin's thoughts turned to Arthur. He’d looked so happy with Lance at the pub, everything about them fitting together perfectly. How awful was Merlin, to resent Arthur’s happiness? God knows Arthur hadn’t always had an easy time of it, with his bigoted father. He deserved happiness, even if it couldn’t be with Merlin.
Another coughing fit took him, harsh coughs tearing from his throat as he desperately gasped for air. There was something stuck in his throat, tearing at his windpipe, and try as he might, he couldn’t dislodge it. Black spots began to dance in front of his eyes, and he realised, as if watching from afar, that he was about to faint.
