There was a pause on the other end before Pepa’s voice came through, steady but with an edge that made Chris’s stomach drop. "Christopher. I know you might not want to hear from me or your dad, and I know this is unexpected. But I’m calling because you should know... Your dad is in the hospital."
Chris felt the world tilt slightly, the gravity of her words weighing on him. His dad? In the hospital? He could almost see Tia Pepa on the other end, her serious face, her eyes softer than her voice let on.
"He’s with Buck there right now," she continued, "he's a good guy, but things are a little fragile, you understand? I would hate for you to be all the way in another state if… if something really bad happened. “Right, uh,” Buck’s brain is very quickly piecing together the slow onceovers, no doubt cataloguing the matching sleep-soft sweatpants and cozy hoodies and unbrushed hair at breakfast-time on a weekday. The singular witnessed conversation regarding co-purchased home cleaning products. The lack of personal space followed by the hasty exit when made to interact with an ex of sorts. “He’s, uh, he’s actually my best friend.”
“Hey man, I love that for you. That’s the best way to do it, you know? Wish everyone got that in their relationship.” She's smiling very warmly at him. Buck’s sweating again.
“He’s my partner,” Buck stresses, as much emphasis on the word ‘partner’ as he can manage.
