Summary
Despite even her most in-depth diagnostic returning with no bugs, errors, or redundancies—no matter how minor—Sage decided she needed to talk to her Father. Either something was wrong with the Eggnet, a weakness their enemies would no doubt discover and abuse sooner or later, or the problem was her.
She knew this, and yet, in front of the door to the study that her Father currently occupied, she hesitated. He'd be able to fix whatever problem had befallen her or the Eggnet, she knew this for certain. And yet, the door had never seemed so imposing before. If it was her code that had broken, he'd repair it, just as he'd repaired her hardlight body whenever its physicality had gotten the best of her.
Her code had never before needed fixing, though.
Months after Metal Sonic disappeared from the Eggman Empire, Sage finds an inaccessible oddity in her files. When she finally gets answers, more about her family is revealed than she'd been supposed to learn.

Summary
By the time they reached the edge of the forest, the sun began poking out over the horizon again, bathing the rolling hills in warm, golden light. To the side, the rays caught on something, reflecting back in an ever-changing pattern as the wind caused gentle waves to wash over the lake. Its surface resembled liquid metal more closely than water like this, Belle decided. It wasn't her first sunrise with a view of a body of water—and it wouldn't be her last—but that didn't mean it wasn't still unique. Even if she stayed in this exact spot, it wouldn't look the same tomorrow. The clouds would've long since moved on, and the wind might get stronger, or weaker, or she wouldn't see the lake at all because fog had taken over the landscape.
Like everything else, this moment would pass. All Belle could do was cherish it as it happened.
Just after Metal joins Belle on her travels, she stops at a lake to take in the scenery. Despite their peaceful surroundings, Metal remains on edge.

Summary
After a subjective eternity and an objective second, she felt a familiar weight press against her senses.
"Oh, you want—" she quieted herself, but Metal didn't look bothered at her attempt at conversation. She didn't want to push her luck though, so she simply gave it a nod and allowed the connection between them to establish.
Despite all the time that had passed, its presence at the edge of her consciousness still felt just as she'd remembered.
One day, Metal disappears. When Eggman fails to contact Belle to search for it again, she resigns herself to having lost another family member—no matter that they weren't close to begin with. Months later, she runs into her estranged sibling again. This time, their interaction lasts longer than just a few moments, even as old baggage still weighs them down.
