Summary
Hermione Granger had been thirteen the last time she had a crush on Remus Lupin, and she had long since forgiven herself for it.
Mostly.
Sixteen years later, a Ministry project puts them across a table from each other again. Remus is translating medieval magical law for a living, quietly settled in a Muggle neighbourhood with his books, his tea, and a life arranged very carefully to require no more than he can safely give. Hermione is brilliant, overworked, chronically underfed, and far too busy changing the world to notice that she has begun looking forward to Thursday evenings more than anything else in her week.
The project ends.
They keep meeting anyway.
There are sticky pub tables, old books, hot chocolate, reading glasses, a highly convincing imaginary boyfriend, and rather more touching than either of them can reasonably explain.
Remus knows first.
Hermione catches up.
Neither of them, unfortunately, knows quite what to do about it.

Harry, being Violet's twin, looked very similar to her, though there had always been a few important differences to set them apart. Harry's eyes — brilliant green and almond shaped, just like Violet's — were framed by his glasses and, most distinctly of all, Harry's forehead bore a scar in the shape of a jagged lightning bolt. And in the ghostly light of the streetlamps, it was easy for Violet to see why the neighbors had such an easy time looking down on him.
Harry's jeans were torn and dirty, his T-shirt baggy and faded, and the soles of his trainers were peeling away from the uppers. His black hair was sticking up at odd angles all around his head, as it had always done, giving him look of general unkemptness. Worst of all was the expression on his face; a mean smile, which he never used to wear, and which was currently directed at Dudley.***
This is the fifth part of my (for the most part) canon-compliant rewrite of the Harry Potter series, told from the perspective of a character that doesn't exist. Violet Potter is Harry's twin sister. This is, as faithfully as I can make it, the story of what would happen if she were there.
