“Enough is enough,” he’d said to Karl. Apparently, the message didn’t go through his friend’s thick skull. Karl is pale, Karl is shaking, and Karl is so weak he can’t stand on his doorstep he’s partially collapsed onto the railing.
“Sorry,” is all he croaks out before George has to catch him before he topples over the railing completely and into his flowerbeds.

Day Eighteen - Let’s Break the Ice || Treading Water
The stinging of saltwater up her nose, in her eyes, and at the back of her throat is an awful feeling. She hits the surface of the water hard, pain snapping up her left side as she tumbles rather ungracefully into the sea. For a moment, she doesn’t know which direction is up and which direction is down. It’s just the ocean.
Finally, her bearings are set straight. Her head breaks the surface of the water and she takes in a huge gulp of air, struggling to tread water under the weight of her clothes. Her ship is still under attack, and there’s shouting and screaming that’s overpowered by the gentle roar of the sea as a wave crests over her head and knocks her back under.Series

Hermitcraft was a very safe place. Unfortunately though, as safe as it is, trauma is not so easily abandoned. Mumbo was gone and Pearl really needed time to herself. She won. It had to be hard for her (although he didn’t have any experience winning).
But he has every right to feel reluctant. Right? He cared for Grian, more than almost anything. But the recent death game made him think that maybe the feeling wasn’t quite reciperated.

Summary
Something, equal parts wariness and weariness, stirs in Olruggio’s eyes whenever Qifrey makes some reference to the future — when he indirectly promises a tomorrow, a next week, an ‘after your commissions are done’. It’s the subtlest thing, a flicker, a spark; someone who knew him less well might not pick up on it. But Qifrey knows Olruggio as well as he knows himself, and he can hardly in good conscience begrudge him his flinch of cynicism. Not when it’s wholly his own fault for having put it there.
Fool you once, shame on me. Fool you twice, still shame on me. Fool you thrice… well, if it’s any consolation whatsoever, I was fooling myself most of all.

Qifrey listened to the chatter, the comments, the passing remarks. He felt the ground steady beneath his shoes as he walked from heel to toe, never quite daring to lift his sole up from the glowing stones. Though it stretched the journey out for longer, none saw fit to hurry him. If anything, both Coco and Agott seemed eager to take their sweet time running off to whatever sights caught their interest before drifting back.
Were Qifrey to turn his gaze upward, all he would find were dazzling lights spattering the city's narrowed skyline, akin to a pond reflecting a swarm of pyreflies as he sat at the bow of a rickety, old boat. Such brilliance wasn't reserved for the grandeur of Silver Eve, rather the sway of the moon, no matter the occasion. It was nothing new, yet...
Charming as the lights were, they now served to only worsen the ache in his temples. How his eye stung so fiercely were he to stare too long at any particular light too bright, piercing through his skull as the Silverwood does—
Adjusting to life outside of a cursed fate is difficult, but familiar company and familial connections make it a fair bit easier.
