Summary
Langdon is falling apart. He's made all the changes everyone's asked him to make, but in the end, he feels more defeated than ever. Beat down, exhausted. Fed up, hopeless—until one person in his life gives him a sliver of hope to hold onto. They come to an agreement together.
“Three months—prove to me that you’re capable of returning to work. Spend those three months with me trying to shape yourself into a better person. Do it under my watch. Convince me that we can put all this shit behind us.”
Langdon stills. He hardly gives it any consideration before he feels his mouth moving on autopilot.
“Yes. Yes, I’ll do it.”
His desperation is still hanging high above him. He feels it in the rapid beating of his heart. Langdon realises again that it’s truly not about the job, it’s about proving himself to someone. He still has a chance, there’s one person willing to give him one.

“What do you mean Dennis? You are good for us.” Robby said, astonished.
“I don’t help out enough here. I need to pull my weight or you guys will forget me again. I don’t want you to forget me.” Dennis cried out. “Please don’t forget me,” he sobbed.

Now that the boy’s back is right in front of Peter, he can see the knobs of his spine and rungs of his ribs through the opening of the hospital gown. The skin stretching over them looks sheer, barely concealing the sharp angles protruding underneath.
Peter wants to run his palm over the expanse, as though he is smoothing out the creases on a rumpled sheet.
