“I promise, it’s food,” Grace says, holding up the shiny little tube. “It’s not very good, but it has to be better than starving.”
“You’re with the COI, aren’t you?” The man says accusingly, “You’re trying to kill me. My sentence has already passed, hasn’t it? I’ve done my penance. I’m not eating that, I won’t let you poison me. I was promised, you people promised me that you’d let me go if I…you promised you wouldn’t kill me!”
Grace blinks stupidly. “What?”

Grace woke up with a gasp, eyes flying open as he gripped the sheets tightly. He was drenched in cold sweat. His hair stuck to his forehead, and his shirt had an obvious wet spot. His heart was beating ferociously and his chest heaved with every breath he was greedily taking. And he could never take a satisfying breath, as a tight squeeze in his chest prevented him from doing so.
He had a nightmare.

“—sorry, Simon— find you!” Ryland shouted.
“Shit,” Simon cursed, shaking his head.
He still wasn’t entirely convinced the messages had been real, but they felt different from his other hallucinations. This voice sounded like a warmth that Simon hadn’t had the privilege of basking in for so long. It felt like hope.
Ryland and Simon get brief moments of contact with each other while fighting for their lives. This unexplained connection could be the key to Simon's survival if Ryland can get to him in time.

Summary
Ryland has been avoiding him.
Not that Simon blames him. It’s one thing to be told that Simon is an experienced killer, it’s another to actually see it in practice.
After a wild Eridian creature attacks the biodome and threatens to break it open, Simon is forced to call on his old Butcher instincts to kill it before it can kill them. Afterwards, however, Ryland won't even look at him, and Simon can't help but fear that it's only a matter of time before Ryland works up the nerve to tell Simon that he can no longer stand being around him, and kicks him out of the biodome.
Then, about a week after the incident, Simon comes home to find that Ryland has prepared an extra special dinner for him. This must be it. His last meal in the biodome before Ryland sends him away forever.
Only, it turns out there may be something else behind Ryland's recent behaviour than what Simon expected...
