Twenty minutes later, Buck was in the principal's office, staring at a child holding crutches, another man who looked seconds from losing it, and his own son, who was beaming like he'd just won a medal.
"He hit someone," Ms. Smith said. "With a broom."
"A broom," Buck repeated.
"The broom," she corrected.
Theo puffed up.
"They were being mean to Chris. So I got the broom and-"
"You used a broom," Buck said slowly.
"It worked."
The man across the room coughed. It sounded suspiciously like a laugh.
Chris spoke up, voice small:
"He was really b-brave."
"Thank you! I was!"

Summary
“Anyway, it’s not a big deal; it happens to everyone at some time or another here. Like Ravi with Buck,” Ravi throws his hands in the air, defeated. “Or like Bobby with me,” Bobby shrugs his shoulders at the group while Buck gapes at him. “Or Buck with Eddie when he first started,” Chimney nods at the final pair, inhaling another slice of pizza into his huge mouth, humming in approval, unaware that five sets of eyes were now locked onto him. He opens his eyes and pauses. “What?”
It takes a moment, but it finally clicks in Chimney’s head. “Oh, fuck,” he flashes his eyes to Buck in terror, wide-eyed, and Buck truly loves the guy, loves him like a brother, but sometimes he wishes Chimney wasn’t his actual brother because Maddie has clearly shared this little Buck fact with Chimney Can’t-Keep-A-Secret-To-Save-His-Life Han, and it’s not like Buck can kill Chimney because he’s Jee’s dad and it’s just –

An ugly laugh comes out of Buck. It sounds bitter. And there’s nothing remotely funny about this. “I’m dying.” Buck’s voice hitch in his throat, his laugh turning into a wet sob.
“No. You’re not dying.” Bobby, raises his voice slightly. And for the first time since they took a fell, it sounds strong, stubborn. “I won’t let you. You hear me Buckley?” Because how dare Buck, Buck, of all people, surrenders with such an ease. Buck, who is stubborn and strong. How dare, Buck, someone who never gives up, accepts his fate?
