“Can we call someone for you?” the man asked. “A friend, a spouse?”

Buck thought of Eddie. Hen. Chimney. Bobby. He thought of them all out to dinner together at this very moment while he bled in an alley. He thought of the silence, the coldness, the looks he’d been getting from them since getting back to work.

He wouldn't have hesitated for a second to call Eddie just a few months ago.

He swallowed hard, looking back up. “No. There’s no one to call. Thanks.”

“Are you sure? You’re bleeding,” the woman pointed at her own lip, as if Buck was unaware he was bleeding from his.

    “Yeah. I’m sure.”

OR: Buck is on the outs with his team after dropping the lawsuit and coming back to work. A night out with a couple guys from B-shift changes everything.

    Summary

Buck didn’t expect a warm welcome when he returned to the 118 after the lawsuit, but he also didn't think his teammates’ anger would last forever. When months go by and Buck is still all but invisible to the team, he decides that everyone would be less miserable if he worked anywhere else.
But leaving the 118 behind is no easy feat, and Buck isn’t sure if he can fully let go of the people he loves…especially his partner and his favorite kid. While Buck tries to figure out how to navigate his new life and care for his family from a distance, Eddie is forced to confront the Buck-shaped hole in his life and the realization that this time, it might be up to him to fix things, especially if there's any hope of getting Buck back where he belongs.

“You slammed the front—never mind. Nonissue,” Buck says, then refocuses. "Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” Eddie nods: sincere enough that Buck is no longer anxious; frantically enough that he doesn’t believe him for a second.

Which is the right call, because Eddie proceeds to shake his head not even five seconds later.

    “No,” he amends.

Buck is the one to nod, then: just the once, pointed and slow. “So,” he chimes, “those are opposites.”

Or: Eddie shows up in Buck's kitchen with a question.

    Summary

Then with the plates rinsed, he'd all but thrown them into the dishwasher, slamming it closed. "I just—I don't get it. Why can't you come to me? Every time, every fucking time. Christ, sometimes, Buck, I just can't with you—you can be so fucking stupid sometimes!"

And as soon as the words had left his mouth, he'd regretted them, especially with the way Buck had flinched back, curling an arm around his midsection with a wobbly smile.

"Yeah, um, I know—I know that I can be," Buck had stuttered, then taken a step back when Eddie took one closer, dodging his hand that he'd reached out in comfort—an apology. Tears had already begun to well in Buck's eyes, and suddenly, he'd looked so fucking young. "Sorry, Eds. I didn't—I just didn't want to worry you—stupid me, right?" The not-laugh that followed made him feel sick.

    --or--

Buck hiding an injury causes Eddie to say something he regrets, which hurts Buck deeply, and he needs to find a way to repair the damage.

    Summary

This can be read as a standalone.

“Need you,” he rasped, still holding the phone in a white-knuckled grip, as he wiped his nose and mouth with the side of his thumb and hand, breathing wet and heavy through parted lips while he did.

“Buck, I need to know if you’ve hurt yourself—if you’re okay.”

He dropped his head against the vanity, hitting the hard edge of the counter, his breaths coming too fast and shallow, leaving him feeling helpless and unable to wrangle them back under his control.

    —or—

Things are going great for Buck, living with Eddie and Christopher, not having self-harmed in months, but then he relapses for no reason other than his brain is being an asshole, and he's too weak to resist, a failure as always—or so he believes himself to be.

But Eddie is there for him, reminding him that all isn’t lost and guiding him back to a better place, using some of the techniques they’d learned in therapy, along with some others Eddie improvised, to do it.

Because Eddie will fight anyone that dares to put Buck down, even if it's Buck’s brain doing the insulting—especially then.

And dammit, Buck can’t love him more for it.
