Smoke rises above the flickering flames and the logs crackle gently, an occasional spark flying upwards into the dark. Crickets chirp softly in the undergrowth. Stars twinkle above them. It’s a perfect night.
Once, Patrick couldn’t have imagined building a life with a partner who wouldn’t share his love for this particular kind of quiet, reflective evening. But somehow, the differences between his and David’s interests fade into insignificance next to what they share.
And anyway, that’s what friends are for.

“Wow, are you sure you don't wanna go right ahead and get a milkshake instead?” the barista in the boring blue button-down smirks.
“Excuse you,” David bristles, “There is nothing wrong with my coffee order: it is a perfectly balanced, tried and tested pick-me-up.”
“Sure, sure, of course. Name for the cup?” The guy still looks kinda smug.
David bites his tongue, because snippy customer service is one of life's great trials, but life without caffeine is worse. He's learnt this to his detriment over the years.

Connections is always the puzzle he looks at last, when he’s sitting at his kitchen counter finishing the final dregs of his third morning coffee. He shouldn’t leave it until last, but it’s almost become a barometer for his day.
That’s when he gets fucking mad. When the purple category is an entirely made-up grouping like words that rhyme with random kitchen utensils, or vegetables with an extra letter for no reason, or items John Lennon probably carried in his wallet.
And that’s what he said, verbatim, to The New York Times: That it’s arrogant, and elitist, and that people don’t enjoy attempting puzzles when the answers only exist inside the creator’s head.
