“Good morning, darling.” Euphemia murmured and ran a finger down the length of her beak. “What have you got for me today?”
Quaffle cooed softly, ruffling her brown feathers as she stuck out her leg to reveal her owner’s latest correspondence.
Euphemia skimmed her son’s scrawled handwriting as she rubbed the owl’s feathers absentmindedly. It was the same worried questions and demands as the last seven letters Euphemia had received. Each had been carefully read and placed on an evergrowing pile.

"Kevin looks up at Jean with wide, wet eyes, and Jean can almost see the red and gold of their lovingly decorated apartment morph to funeral black in Kevin's mind. He is a million miles away from the present, back in Riko's room, and Jean and Jeremy were his only lifeline both here and there. This is not unearned fear. Kevin is many things, and Jean may call him a coward to his face, but he is not fragile. Kevin doesn't shatter like this. Kevin is strong, and protective to a fault, and he would never cling to Jean like this if Tetsuji hadn't broken him to nothing while Jean wasn't looking.
'He cannot take you,' Jean murmurs into Kevin's hair. Jeremy rubs his cheek against Kevin's knee in agreement. 'We will not let him.'"

What starts as a reconciliation visit to California shatters into a make-shift psych hold for Kevin at Jean and Jeremy's when Tetsuji Moriyama announces his plan to force his godson into a conservatorship. Jean and Jeremy race to reexamine the story of Kevin Day they've been told before Kevin finds drastic means to escape returning to his own personal hell, and find that not even the son of exy could survive what went on behind closed doors alone.

Jeremy reaches over and messes with Kevin’s hair, nails scratching his scalp lightly, and he leans into it hard, barely noticing it when he turns to whisper to Jean that “they should probably get him home.” Then the car is starting and Jeremy’s hand pulls back and this time, this time Kevin holds back the whine, but he’s still feeling fucking ridiculous because what grown man enjoys being pet. Kevin is not built for this, he is not built for affection and soft touches, he is built to be hit and bruised and pushed to his limits so this is just all fucking wrong.
