“Hey, I was a morbid kid and I turned out just fine,” Tommy says, and at Maddie’s glare backtracks to, “Point taken.”
“Do you even know what you did to him?” Maddie asks, like the words have finally fought their way out of her mouth.

Alex's eyes zero in on the black band nestled on Tommy's ring finger. "Oh," he says flatly. "Congratulations."
