Summary
The first time Arthur meets Charlotte, it don't occur to him—likely because he's more focused on making sure the woman ain't gonna drop dead the second he rides off again. Her skirts are stained with a widow’s grave-dirt, her eyes are betraying ghosts he knows too well, and he thinks leaving her by her lonesome won’t turn out any kind of good.
When she stands up, he can’t help thinking of Mrs Adler again. This reservoir of steel he ain’t ever had reason to keep, her reaching down deep inside and drawing it up through her spine despite the way it makes her tremble harder, half-starved as she is.
It’s only on the ride back to camp, bracing himself for the gloomy desperation of Beaver Hollow, that Arthur gets to thinking.
Charlotte ain’t Sadie. Maybe the idea formulating at the back of his head is a terrible one; maybe they’ll turn on him for thinking all widows alike or some such.
But he thinks maybe it might be good for Mrs Adler to meet Mrs Balfour.

The question "what if Arthur brought Sadie to meet Charlotte and it changed everything?" turned into a bit of a long multi-character study on grief and family. With gunfights. And Sadie shooting Micah.

Aramis just raises a hand in response, then sighs heavily once he’s disappeared around the corner, letting the last pretenses of cheer fall away. Not bothering to hurry, he wanders past the straggling cadets and stable boys to find his leathers and prepare for patrol. It’s going to be a long, slow few days.......But of course, for a Musketeer alone in Paris, things never stay slow for long. Fortunately, a Musketeer is never truly alone.
