Se colocasse alguma coisa depois, como Je t’aime bien, já não era a mesma coisa. Ich liebe dich, em alemão, não é dito para qualquer pessoa sem causar uma situação constrangedora, mas havia o ich lieb dich. Era apenas uma palavra, mas o contexto, a intensidade, ou até mesmo uma letra a menos a mudava completamente. Porque não era a palavra que transformava o sentimento, era ele que a esticava e a moldava enquanto ela falhava em capturá-lo.
    Ainda assim, sem a palavra, Neil talvez nunca tivesse percebido que o sentimento esteve ali, ao seu alcance, o tempo todo. Da mesma forma como não percebia que seus passos o guiavam para o terraço no modo automático, quer fosse uma decisão consciente ou não.
