Summary
Mel turns around sharply, eyes huge, a little red-rimmed, braid a little undone. Her knuckles are white as she grasps the cold metal of the barrier.
“Sorry,” she sniffs. “I wasn’t sure if the roof access was prohibited.”
Robby shakes his head. “That’s not the thing I’m worried about,” he almost chuckles. “I’m up here more than I should be. But you shouldn’t be here at all, or I haven’t been doing my job right.”
A tough case hits too close to home for Mel. Robby reveals, in a heart-to-heart with the goal to connect, that she's not the only one who's lost their parents.

Summary
“Hi, this is the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s Emergency Department,” the voice on the phone greeted. Oddly formal, but okay. Maybe Gloria had gotten on their asses about professionalism. “We’re calling about a patient, Michael Robinavitch, who got into a motorcycle accident. He’s going to be okay, but we wanted to call—”
Jack’s blood went cold.
“Wait, Robby got into a fucking motorcycle crash?”
Robby gets into an accident on his motorcycle. The person called, and the person who cares, is Jack.

Summary
“Here,” Santos said bluntly as she thrust out the mug of tea. The motion was more careful than she really wanted it to be, being reasonably more concerned about hot liquid spilling out of it.
Whitaker’s eyes flitted between the tea offered to him and to Santos’ face. She was looking anywhere but him, pretending to not flick her gaze over once or twice.
“You made me tea?”
Whitaker's sick. Santos does a fantastic job of acting like she doesn't care.

Summary
“He knows how much you mean to him. He knows that, Jack. I don’t think he’d have it in him to leave you like that.”
But his wife had left him like that. His army mates had left him. Every goddamn patient he couldn’t save had left him. And he knows damn well all the people that had left Robby. Sometimes, it wasn’t up to them. Sometimes people just fucking left.
But even still, god, Jack had hoped that Robby would pull through for this one.
Robby leaves for his sabbatical, and doesn't answer his phone. Jack assumes that only the absolute worst could have happened, and he doesn't take it well.

Summary
“Alhaitham,” Kaveh drawls quietly, the alcohol hitting his system. “Why don’t you touch me?”
Alhaitham blinks. He wasn’t expected to be asked about this, of all things. This goes against everything he had gathered from his observations of Kaveh’s behavior.
“Because… you don’t like being touched?” Alhaitham supplies.
“But I do,” Kaveh whines. “And you never touch me.”
Or, Kaveh keeps reacting strangely when Alhaitham touches him. In observing why exactly Kaveh's behaving like this, Alhaitham realizes that what Kaveh desires aligns awfully close to his own.

Summary
It had been one of those days - the kind that scraped you down to the cartilage and called it a good save. He’d woken up with the ghost of a dream under his skin, hours before his shift even started; one of those ones where he had to just lie there to remind himself the world was still spinning. Part of him had been tempted to call Jack. He would have picked up. Taken his shift - or better, offered to come over. Then they’d do that thing where Jack would put on some shitty Spaghetti Western and keep running commentary going until Robby felt like a person again.
Instead, he’d gotten up, gone through the motions, and into work.
---
Robby doesn't know how to keep going - he knows it's more than just exhaustion. He also doesn't know how to let himself love Jack. Lucky for him, Jack knows how to do both.

Summary
Kiara continued, “Oh, before you go, I keep forgetting to tell you. I know Robby is always reminding you all that I’m here to talk, if you ever need it, but I wanted to mention that we also have a program specifically for supporting neurodivergent staff.”
“Oh,” said Mel, “That’s great!”
“Does that mean you're interested?”
Mel blinked. “Interested?”
“In the…” Kiara stopped, expression shifting in a way that Mel couldn’t quite identify. “Oh. I… I’m sorry, I got the impression-”
“Wait,” blurted Mel, “you thought- No. I’m not, um, I’m not neurodivergent.”
Or, Mel's coworkers seem to be under the misconception that she is autistic. Which she is not, obviously. Right?

Summary
“I recently got a, uhm, diagnosis.”
That was obviously the wrong thing to say, which she only realized after the words had left her mouth. Robby took an automatic step towards her, his eyes widening.
