    The Sergeant only managed a grunt in reply as he placed the bundle of ikema roots on top of the fortune teller’s satchel where she presumably kept her other wares. Though the fox skull she used for her fortune telling, her Siratki Kamuy, sat on the small table beside the bed. It was rarely out of her reach.

    The fact she usually wore a fox pelt and used its skull for her divinations seemed appropriate to Tsukishima. Her ability to fabricate reality for her customers wasn’t unlike the stories of fox women, kitsune, he had heard as a child.

    “I want to do something to thank you,” Inkarmat placed a protective hand on her stomach. “Perhaps a free session?”

    An image of long, windswept curls flashed in his mind’s eye.

    “That will not be necessary,” Tsukishima replied quickly.

    After Asirpa escapes Lieutenant Tsurumi’s grasp in Odomari, Sergeant Tsukishima dutifully watches over the Hokkaido hospital ward, keeping a close eye on the cannibal doctor and pregnant Inkarmat. Though he's skeptical of her fortunetelling, the Ainu woman still manages to get under his skin. The only thing worse than sweet lies is the bitter truth.

    Just barely, Edogai has survived the explosion in the mines. After a period of recovery, he's assigned a new officer to look after him while he continues his work for lieutenant Tsurumi. Someone his age who unlike Mr. Tsukishima and Mr. Maeyama knows his manners and doesn't smell bad at all.

    The beginnings are rough. But after a while, Edogai and Koito might just become the first real friend each of them ever had... perhaps even something more.
