A tiny pause. A little hitch in his breath. The kind of thing most people wouldn’t notice, but Tommy does.
“You okay, baby?” he asks, frowning a little.
“Yeah. Yeah, honey, just sleepy.” Evan’s voice is light, but there’s a foggy edge to it that doesn’t belong there.
Sleepy. At nine in the morning. After doing nothing but rolling around and laughing.Tommy’s concern sharpens. Evan doesn’t get sleepy. Even on his worst days, he’s restless and buzzing with energy he doesn’t know how to contain.

Buck can't recall how it started, or how he got here, sitting there in the back of an ambulance, as paramedics he doesn’t know try to separate him from Jee.
"No," He manages to gasp out, pulling his niece tighter to him. "No, you can't... you can't have her. She's... she's mine. I promised."
He doesn't remember who he promised, or what he promised, but that doesn't matter now. He promised and he was going to keep it. Even if it killed him. Why hadn't it killed him? Why was he still here? No one else really was.

He knows he shouldn’t be here, this isn’t what they do anymore, he ruined this, but he can’t help it. He’s always been selfish when it comes to Buck anyway. He knocks softly and it’s almost magical to him how Buck appears.
“Sorry, we don’t want to buy- Eddie?”
“Hey Buck,” Eddie says. “Look I know you don’t want me to be here, but I just- I just wanted to give you this.”
He holds out the casserole, and Buck takes it almost mechanically. He knows Buck is thinking about the last time they were in this position. He knows he’s thinking of wrapped wrists and red eyes. He knows he’s thinking of the sharp intake of breath and the loud click of the door, and no words spoken between them. He knows he’s thinking about it, because he is too. It’s out and too loud in the small space between them.
