“What is there to talk about?”
“What’s there to talk about?!” Hollander scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re playing for my fucking team!”
“I know.”
“Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”
“Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”
Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”
“Right.”
“And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. He's lonely, and angry, and he misses Boston. He doesn't know if it helps that Hollander is there or not.

Hayden watches Shane, almost expecting him to go, "wow, I was hacked while we were at practice, look at these weird messages!". But no such luck. Shane smiles.
A real smile, a big one, his text from Lily smile. God, Hayden was so sure they were sending each other endless strings of heart emojis and "I miss you more" "no, I miss you more"s, not…that. Never in a million years would he have guessed that.

The Boston Bears group chat had sixty-three new messages in the span of three minutes.
His coffee forgotten, Ilya swiped open the chat, scrolling quickly to find the source of the commotion. A link to The Athletic, posted by Jensen, their captain, followed by a string of exclamation points. Ilya tapped it, the headline materializing on his screen like a blow to the chest:
BREAKING: MONTREAL VOYAGEURS’ SECOND DRAFT SHANE HOLLANDER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Ilya's pulse jumped, hard and sudden in his throat. The mug slipped from his hand, not falling but landing too heavily on the counter, coffee slopping over the rim. He set it down properly, his movements mechanical, and forced himself to read the rest of the headline:
20-YEAR-OLD ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STEPPING AWAY TO PURSUE HARVARD BUSINESS DEGREE
Or
Shane Hollander has spent his entire life living and breathing hockey. At twenty, at the height of his career, he makes an unthinkable choice: he walks away to discover who he is beyond the ice.
But some things don’t stay behind.
What happens when the rivalry between him and Rozanov ends, but the pull doesn’t?

Ilya’s mouth is slightly open, his eyebrows lifted in surprise. A light pink color dusts the tops of his cheekbones. He clears his throat before responding, “I admit defeat. Shane Hollander can do anything he puts his mind to.”
“I really wasn’t trying to—”
“Ah, ah.” In the blink of an eye, Ilya seems to go back to his normal demeanor. “You get gold star for now, but I will not forget about this. I will get my revenge.” Then, he leans into Shane’s space again, close enough that Shane can feel Ilya’s breath across his face when he adds, “You won’t know what hit you.”
Shane Hollander is not looking for a boyfriend. The only things he’s willing to give attention to are school and hockey. His friends have stopped setting him up on blind dates and his parents no longer ask if he’s bringing anyone home for breaks. The last person Shane is expecting to be a problem is his new psychology partner.

Retired hockey player Shane has been lying to his mom about having a boyfriend, but now he’s agreed to take said boyfriend to the family reunion.
Ilya Rozanov is Shane’s friendly neighbour. Maybe he can help!
“Okay, so this is my plan: I re-download Tinder and make a profile that has one photo of me, with the caption ‘I need a fake boyfriend for my family reunion. I will pay you $30,000 and cover travel.’ That’ll work, right?”
Or: The smutty fake dating fic with no miscommunication! They said it couldn’t be done, but I have done it.

"Shane." His mom gently shook his good shoulder, rousing Shane from a very pleasant and drugged-up sleep. He blinked a few times, still unused to the bright fluorescence of the hospital lights. He briefly wondered if there was a way he could ask them to turn them down. Did hospital lights dim? They should. "Your phone is ringing. Do you want me to answer it?"
"Whosit?" he slurred, his tongue not fitting right in his mouth. Is that something he should talk to the doctor about? He was pretty sure a too-big tongue wasn't a side effect of a concussion or a broken collarbone.
"Um."Mom's eyes flitted from Shane's phone to his face and back again. "Someone named Lily?" It came out as a question, her intense stare suggesting it wasn't the one she wanted to ask.
or; after he is injured on the ice, shane spends his recovery in his childhood home. and someone named lily won't stop calling him

Heat spread across Ilya's face. His mouth fell open slightly. He let out a short, stuttered laugh of disbelief. This couldn't- he was straight, he wasn't-
“Finally got you at your own game.” Shane's smirk widened to a smile, his hand clapping down on Ilya's shoulder to squeeze it slightly. For once in his life, Ilya was unable to find his voice.
“Damn.” Shane laughed, jostling him a bit. “If I had known this was all it took to get you to shut the fuck up, I would have started flirting back years ago.”
----
When old college friends Ilya and Shane show up to their mutual best friend's wedding, they are ready to fulfill their duties as bridesmen. Even after years of not seeing each other, they fall right back into their usual banter.
Ilya loves to flirt with Shane. Shane loves to tell him to fuck off. It's a running bit. Nothing more than a joke between two friends; because Shane is gay and Ilya is straight and it doesn't actually mean anything…until Shane finally decides to flirt back, and Ilya's world suddenly tilts on its axis.

“You are my friend, Hayden, but he is the man I am going to spend the rest of my life with - he is the man that I love. I will choose him over you, every fucking time.”
Over anything and everything, Shane would choose Ilya. Even over hockey, if it came to that. There’s no doubt in his mind, no question about it.
Losing hockey would hurt, and Shane would grieve it, but it wouldn’t kill him. It would be an ache he could live with. Losing Ilya is not something that Shane could ever survive. They’re so tangled together - so intertwined - that to lose Ilya would be to lose himself.

“You are going to make fun of me!” Ilya cries as he hides his face away from Shane in the crook of his elbow where he’s leaned forward in agony on the kitchen counter.
“Ilya, I’m not going to make fun of you. You’ll get contacts next week but you just have to wear the glasses in the meantime.”
“But I will look so boring.”
“You don’t think my glasses are boring, and I know that for a fact.”
“Of course I don’t.” he groans again. “They’re perfect, I’ve never gotten harder in my life than when I see you in glasses.” he mumbles and Shane just shakes his head with a long exhale. He’s going to have to bring out the big guns.

When Shane was displeased with Ilya, there was a certain intensity in his speech that called to Ilya like a siren song, dragging him to an early grave with its vehemence. His voice would pitch higher, bossy and prissy and so stridently righteous it should be intolerable.

Summary
Two years of playing together, and it still hit him every time. The casualness of it. My husband. Said out loud, in public. After years of hiding—stolen moments in hotel rooms, careful distance in public, the constant exhausting performance of just teammates, just rivals, nothing to see here—now Ilya could say it like it was nothing. Like it was easy, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Because it was. Finally.
In which Ilya Hollander-Rozanov cannot shut up about his husband. (Subtitled: No one asked, Ilya. Ilya. No one asked.)
