Summary
Neil wakes with a familiar feeling settling in his chest, rattling in his bones. He can smell the cigarette smoke, the burning flesh, the bloody fingers and all of the above mash together, helpful to create a hazy impression of Neil's surroundings.
He isn’t sure if he woke up hurting, or if the wave of phantom pain came with the choking fear. He only knows to push himself up from the bed, eyes wide and focused on the door, like he knows someone is behind it.
Neil sometimes gets a tingle, an anxious little thing that keeps him alert and alive when his mother is not near. She should be watching the door now.
She should be, but when Neil glances to his side he has to brace himself to not move at all. Andrew is asleep beside him.

Now, Remus had no idea who that guitarist took him for, but he knew how these things end. With Remus despising himself over and over in ways he didn’t know were possible. He had a hard time getting along with men. He supposed it wasn't the whole male population’s fault, he would just get a giddy sense that some days pushed him onto the ninth cloud and others made him miserable, unable to exist in the overwhelming realization of his own absolute failure.
Not all men, for sure.
But the second he set eyes on Sirius Black, he knew. He didn’t need the guitarist to catch on as well.

There’s not really a point in owning a car, especially with the cost of insurance. With the threat of student debt looming overhead like a cloud, Bernard can’t afford to buy a car without help, and there’s no way he’ll ever ask Tim.
So Bernard doesn’t really drive. He’s happy to let his weirdly specific driving skills get swept under the rug, because the thing he has with Tim still feels delicate and new, and he doesn’t want to ruin it by bringing up that his uncle was in a gang and hey, he just happened to teach Bernard how to drive. Bernard wants to avoid any kind of conversation around crime in Gotham, actually. Especially after what happened in high school.
It’s not like he’s ever going to need to drive a getaway car, anyway. As far as Bernard is concerned, it’ll never come up.
Bernard learned to drive from his henchman uncle. The last place he expects to use this skill is at a dinner with his boyfriend's family.

“Sirius,” Remus said.
That was the only warning.
He said it softly, like a statement, almost casually– so casually that Sirius turned expecting him to ask something about what they were having for dinner, or telling him he wanted honey in his tea, or complain about how off brand sports-drink didn’t taste as good as Gatorade.
Instead, Remus’ knees were already buckling. His arm was sliding off of the granite corner of the countertop, and his shoulder was colliding with the barstool to his right, and his body was thudding against the hardwood, and the only warning Sirius got was his name. That was it.
He was moving before he even realized what was happening.
