    Grace blinks and finds himself on Earth, face-first in the dirt, only moments after the explosion of the Baikonur Research Center. The bad news: he's time traveled, or lost his marbles, or possibly both. The good news: he gets to pack his own bags, this time around.

    Rocky wakes up and finds himself on the Blip-A, surrounded by his very not-dead crewmates. The good news: not-dead crewmates! The bad news: Rocky has to convince twenty-three Eridians that he didn't just hallucinate an entire lifetime, yes it is absolutely necessary that he retrofit the entire ship with an astrophage protective shielding layer, and also, yeah, they have to hang out in space for a bit. Just a couple decades, no big deal.

    Or, a time-travel fix-it AU where everyone lives, nobody dies, and everything is from the POV of people that aren't Ryland Grace or Rocky. And boy, are they real goddamned curious about how these two flailing idiots managed to get that codependent. Without ever having met before, of course.

    I wasn't really expecting it to come up at all, if I'm being honest, but you know what they say about assuming. After all the initial discussions and work to figure out what I could eat, what I needed to get via food, and how best to ensure adequate nutrition, I figured food wouldn't come up again. Like, ever. Eridians are super private about it, and it's a nutritional obligation to them, not a social norm like it is for humans. That was fine - they soundproofed my kitchen and dining room for an added layer of protection, once they realised how noisily humans eat. No harm, no foul.

    I hadn't accounted for the anthropologists.

    A brave group of Eridian scientists finally broach the taboo topic of food with Grace, and there's a whole lot of miscommunication, a few false allegations, and the unveiling of an unintentional slight Eridians have been committing against Grace since the beginning - with Rocky being the worst offender of them all.

    I leaned forward and tapped the title of the folder as I slid it back to her.
    "From the Exodus. Manna was gathered daily rather than stockpiled," I said. "Corny religious project name? It's got your hands all over it."
    To my surprise, she actually laughed. She cocked her head to the side and gave me a slow, quizzical look.
    "Good catch."
    I shrugged. "My mother was Jewish."
    "Yeah, I know."
    She stared at me and I stared back. We both chose to ignore the few seconds of silence that followed.

    Usually when he woke up, it was with sorrow and longing threatening to swallow him whole. Tears already on his face and body trembling. Rocky would be above him, chirping his name over and over until he realized Grace was actually awake, then switching to 'words of comfort' and some sort of song Grace didn't recognize but soothed him, nonetheless.

    Today, however, he did not wake up to tears, to sadness. When he opened his eyes, body still shaking, a familiar feeling gripped him in a way he hadn't displayed properly in years.

    The deep, pulsing anger he felt was unlike anything he'd ever felt.

    or: Grace deserves to crash out, as a treat.
