Was it wrong for Wei Ying to hijack the microphone before crossing the stage to graduate? Absolutely. But the speech he gave was romantic—up until the mic was cut off and the band played Pomp and Circumstance at fortissimo while Lan-laoshi chased Wei Ying across the stage.
"He's a disgrace, and I'm gonna wring his neck when I see him," Jiang Cheng seethes. "Fucking imbecile ingrate, son-of-a–"
"Jiang Cheng!" Nie Huaisang's fist hits the soft cushion. "I know you don't approve, but don't you dare talk about my friend like that!"
"Why the fuck are you defending him?!" Jiang Cheng yells, leaning towards Nie Huaisang who, for once in his life, refuses to cower. "I can tell how much he's hurt you."
Nie Huaisang deflates slightly. "Hurt…me?"
"Yeah! I know you have, like, a crush on him or whatever, but—"
"Excuse me?!" Nie Huaisang barks out a laugh. "You think I… Wow. Unbelievable."
Jiang Cheng crosses his arms again, looking almost…hurt. "You two just… You always hang out together."

Huaisang hiccuped, and his shoulders shook again. "Jiang-xiong."
She glanced over at Yaling, and they traded raised eyebrows. Jiang Cheng was one of her son's two best friends and he'd never given any inkling that his feelings for the other boy might be anything other than friendship.
