    Summary

The scream that rips its way out of Shane’s chest is feral, inhuman. A wretched, mournful wail being torn from his body by the bony hands of grief. He collapses to his knees and sobs, anguish pouring out of him like a tidal wave.

Suddenly there are arms around him, but they’re not the right ones. Not Ilya.

    Or, Ilya’s plane goes down.

Shane doesn’t think he’s ever been allowed this before: to be imperfect. But with Rozanov holding him, he doesn’t have to be what people expect of him. He doesn’t have to be neat, tidy, media-trained Shane Hollander, who is just so grateful he gets to play the sport he loves.

Instead, he gets be angry that the sport doesn’t love him back.

    “Why do you care, Hollander?”

Shane blinked. “I… I just…” The room felt too tight, constricting around Shane’s throat. He didn’t know why he cared, really. Every player got injured, it was part of the game. It wasn’t like Shane had never donned a black eye from a stray elbow or puck to the face. But this felt different. A word that Shane didn’t want to speak out loud, because he was sure Ilya wouldn’t like it.

    It felt deliberate.

    OR:

Ilya has started getting injured far more frequently, and Shane is all fucked up about it.
